Udyam registration is free on udyamregistration.gov.in with an Aadhaar OTP and your PAN. You fill six screens without uploading anything, your Udyam number appears when you submit, and the e-certificate generally follows within 2 to 3 days.
Udyam registration online: key takeaways
- It is free only on the government portal. The portal also lists udyam.gov.in and msmeregistration.gov.in as official addresses; anything that charges a fee is a private site.
- Names must match your records: the owner's name exactly as on Aadhaar, and the PAN holder's name and date exactly as on PAN.
- Investment is the written down value of your equipment minus pollution control, R&D and safety devices, and turnover leaves out exports.
- Your Udyam number is shown the moment you submit. The Ministry's Champions FAQ says the e-certificate generally takes 2 to 3 days when PAN and GST details are used.
- For help, the official contact is champions@gov.in or +91 8308809334 by call or WhatsApp, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm.

What Is Udyam Registration?
Udyam registration is the Ministry of MSME's online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. It gives a business a permanent 19-character Udyam number and an e-certificate, and it has replaced Udyog Aadhaar since 1 July 2020.
It is voluntary, free, paperless and based on self-declaration, and it never needs renewal. A business can hold only one Udyam registration, with every unit and activity added to it.
If you are still weighing whether it is worth doing, see what registration gets each business.
Since 1 April 2025, micro means up to ₹2.5 crore invested and ₹10 crore turnover. Small goes up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, and medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.
Who can register, and who cannot
Any business in manufacturing or services can register, whatever its legal form, if it stays within the medium limits. That covers:
- Sole proprietors, including freelancers and consultants who bill clients in their own name
- Partnership firms, HUFs, companies and LLPs
- Co-operatives, trusts and societies
- Retail and wholesale traders (NIC 45, 46 and 47), but only for priority sector lending
Some activities cannot register at all. Crop and animal production (NIC 01) is out, except listed allied work such as poultry hatcheries, bee-keeping and cotton ginning.
So are forestry (NIC 02), fishing (NIC 03), households as employers or producing for own use (NIC 97 and 98), and foreign bodies (NIC 99). Check borderline cases before you file.
What Do You Need Before You Start?
You need details, not documents. The Udyam registration documents are really these facts, typed into the form, and the documents differ by business type:
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with an active linked mobile for the OTP
- The business PAN, with the name and date of birth or incorporation exactly as on it
- A GSTIN, only if GST law requires you to have one
- Last year's investment and turnover figures, or your own estimates if you have no ITR yet
- Bank account number and IFSC
- Office and unit addresses, start date, employee count and your NIC activity codes
Udyam registration fees are zero. The portal says no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone, and no private agency is authorised to file for you.
Watch for three signs of a private lookalike. The page asks for payment, sometimes only at checkout. It carries a small "not a government site" or "consultancy" line. Or someone asks you to share the Aadhaar OTP.
Udyam Registration Form: Every Field, Screen by Screen
The Udyam registration form runs across six screens on the official Udyam Registration portal: Aadhaar Verification, PAN Verification, Basic Details, Official Address, Plant/Unit Details and Other Details. Start from "New Registration" on the home page.
The walkthrough below follows the official Udyam registration sample form published on the portal.
Screen 1: Aadhaar Verification
- Field 1, Aadhaar Number: of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory.
- Field 2, Name of Entrepreneur: the person's name exactly as on Aadhaar, initials included, not the business name.
- Consent: tick the box allowing the Ministry to use the Aadhaar number, then click "Validate & Generate OTP".
- OTP: type the OTP sent to the mobile linked to that Aadhaar and click Validate. If it does not come within a few minutes, generate it again.
Once the Aadhaar is validated, the PAN Verification section opens on the same page. If the OTP never arrives, see the error table below.
Screen 2: PAN Verification
- Field 3, Type of Organisation: options include Proprietary, Hindu Undivided Family, Partnership, Co-operative, Private or Public Limited Company, LLP, Society and Trust. A proprietor uses their own Aadhaar; every other type uses the managing partner's, karta's or authorised signatory's.
- Field 4.1, PAN: the proprietor's personal PAN, or the entity's own PAN for every other type. Fields 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 take the name and the date of birth or incorporation as per PAN.
- Consent: allow the use of your ITR and GST data for classification, then click "PAN Validate".
- Field 4.2: whether you filed the ITR for the previous year shown on the form. A new business answers No.
- GSTIN: the form then asks whether you have a GSTIN. Answer Yes only if you hold one, so the portal can match your GST data through the PAN.
After "PAN Validate", the portal fetches your investment and turnover figures from your ITR and GST records where they exist, and shows them on the form.
Investment and turnover
- Field 5, Investment: written down value of plant, machinery or equipment on 31 March of last year, minus pollution control, R&D and industrial safety devices. Land, buildings, furniture and fittings never count.
- Field 6, Turnover: total turnover, minus export turnover, gives your net turnover.
A new business without an ITR uses the purchase invoice value of its equipment, without GST.
Here is a worked example. A design studio bought laptops and a camera for ₹3 lakh last year.
After one year of depreciation in its books, their written down value on 31 March is ₹1.8 lakh, so field 5 is ₹1.8 lakh.
The same studio billed ₹80 lakh, of which ₹50 lakh came from overseas clients. Net turnover is ₹30 lakh. Both numbers sit far below ₹2.5 crore and ₹10 crore, so the studio is a micro enterprise.
Getting paid from abroad: keep proof of every foreign payment. With Xflow, you can download an eFIRA (electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) within 24 hours of every withdrawal, at no extra cost.
If a fetched figure looks wrong, it came from your ITR or GST return. Check the return you filed, correct it there if needed, and the next update picks up the right number.
Screen 3: Basic Details
- Fields 7 and 8: the name as per PAN (filled in) and the enterprise name, which you can edit.
- Fields 9 and 10: mobile and email. These receive every future OTP, so use ones you will keep.
- Fields 11 to 13: social category (General, SC, ST or OBC), gender, and whether the owner is specially abled.
Screen 4: Official Address
Field 14
takes the full office address, PIN, state and district, and asks you to choose your District Industries Centre.
Screen 5: Plant/Unit Details
Field 15
lists each plant or unit. Name it, click "Add Unit", fill its address, and click "Add Plant". Add every location here rather than registering again.
Screen 6: Other Details
| Field | What to enter | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 16. Previous registration | Old EM-II or Udyog Aadhaar number, or N/A | Old numbers no longer count on their own |
| 17. Status | Date of incorporation, whether business started, start date | No future dates; start not before incorporation |
| 18. Bank details | Bank name, IFSC, account number | Copy from a cheque or passbook |
| 19. Major activity | Manufacturing or Services; traders pick Services, then a trading NIC code | Pick your main line of work |
| 20. NIC codes | The 2, 4 and 5-digit codes, or a word search | See the NIC steps below |
| 21. Persons employed | Male, female and other staff counts | Includes a declaration that no child is employed |
| Portal sign-ups | Yes or no for GeM, TReDS, NCS, NSIC B2B and Skill India Digital | Optional; numbered 22, 23, 24, 25 and 27 |
How to pick your Udyam registration NIC code
Your NIC code describes your activity, and you can find it in two ways on screen 6. Pick your main activity first, then add every other line of work you bill for.
- Drop-downs: choose the 2-digit division, then the 4-digit group, then the 5-digit line that fits your work best.
- Word search: click "Search NIC Code in Lesser Steps", type a plain word such as "software", "tailoring" or "graphic design", and pick the 5-digit line from the matches.
- Add Activity: click it after each code so the code is saved, then repeat for your next activity.
Worked example: a freelance designer searches "graphic design" and picks 74103. Through the drop-downs, the same code sits under division 74 (other professional, scientific and technical activities) and group 7410 (specialised design).
She also builds websites, so she adds 62011 with "Add Activity".
Avoid trading codes (45, 46 and 47) unless you actually buy and resell goods. They limit your benefits to priority sector lending, though registering still helps traders in a few ways.
Five fields people get wrong
- Enterprise name (field 8): it is filled in but editable. Use the trade name on your invoices and bank account, so buyers and banks see the same name.
- Date of incorporation (field 17): a sole proprietor has no incorporation, so use the date the business was set up.
- NIC code (field 20): a trading code limits your benefits, so check it against the steps above.
- Investment (field 5): a service firm counts its equipment, such as laptops and cameras, not rent or salaries.
- Mobile and email (fields 9 and 10): these become your login and OTP route for years, so use ones you will keep.
Finally, accept the declaration that the details are true, and click "Submit & Get Final OTP". Enter that OTP to complete the Udyam registration process.
What Happens After You Submit?
After you submit, your Udyam registration number appears on screen in the form UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, and the e-certificate is issued online once registration is complete. There is no approval step after the final OTP.
The Ministry's Champions FAQ says the certificate generally takes 2 to 3 days when PAN and GST details are used. Screenshot or note the number at once, because you need it for every login.
- The certificate: shows your number, business name, category by year, activity, address, dates and NIC codes, with a dynamic QR code.
- Sharing it: send the plain print. The "Print with Annexure" copy also shows your PAN and bank details.
- Getting back in: use "Udyami Login" with the number, the mobile you filed and an OTP. Lost the number? Use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number".
- Keeping it valid: there is no renewal. ITR and GST figures flow in through your PAN, but changes in address, ownership, activity or bank account are yours to update; unrecorded changes can lead to suspension.
Then do three things. Print the Udyam number on your invoices and purchase orders. Send the certificate to your bank so loans are tagged as MSME. Set a reminder to log in after each ITR filing and check your category.
How to download your Udyam certificate
Open Print/Verify, choose "Print Udyam Certificate", and enter your Udyam number (the portal calls it 19 digits), registered mobile, an OTP by mobile or email and the case-sensitive code. Click "Validate OTP & Login", then print or save the PDF.
Common Udyam Registration Errors and How to Fix Them
Most Udyam registration errors come from a detail that does not match Aadhaar, PAN or the portal's own checks. Here is what each common one means.
| What you see | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Udyam registration OTP not received | No mobile linked to the Aadhaar, or an old number | Update the mobile with UIDAI, or use the DIC route |
| Name rejected after the OTP | Name differs from Aadhaar | Type it exactly as printed on Aadhaar, including initials |
| "You must Agree Declarations" | Consent box left unticked | Tick the consent and try again |
| PAN validation fails | Name or date differs from the PAN record | Copy both exactly from the PAN card |
| PAN already used for a Udyam registration | One PAN holds one Udyam | Recover it with Forgot Udyam/UAM Number, then use Udyami Login |
| "Registration with this Mobile No. has already done 5 times" | That mobile was used for five registrations | Use the owner's own mobile and email |
| Date rejected | A current or future date, or start date before incorporation | Enter past dates in the right order |
| GSTIN not fetched | No GSTIN, or GST not applicable | Continue without it if GST does not apply |
| A site asks for a fee or your OTP | A private lookalike | Open udyamregistration.gov.in directly |
No Aadhaar at all? You cannot file online, but a District Industries Centre or MSME Champions office can register you. Bring one of these: your Aadhaar enrolment slip, bank photo passbook, voter ID, passport or driving licence.
They also help you enrol for Aadhaar. Before you go, read how the assisted route works.
Udyam Registration Helpline Number and Official Contacts
The Udyam registration helpline is run by MSME Champions: email champions@gov.in, or call or WhatsApp +91 8308809334. It works Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm, and these details appear in the footer of every page of the official portal.
The portal has no FAQ page. For problems the form will not let you fix, use the helpline or your District Industries Centre. Ignore numbers on private sites that offer to file for a fee.
What Are the Benefits of Udyam Registration?
Udyam registration gives micro and small businesses faster payment from buyers, easier bank credit and an edge in government buying.
- Payment within 45 days: under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay registered micro and small suppliers by the agreed date, at most 45 days after acceptance. With no agreed date, the limit is 15 days.
- Interest if late: compound interest at three times the RBI Bank Rate, added monthly. At the 5.75% Bank Rate set in October 2026, that is 17.25% a year.
- Who it covers: supplies made after you register, and not traders.
- Claims: new delayed-payment claims go to the MSME ODR portal, not the older Samadhaan portal.
- Credit: your loan counts towards the bank's priority sector target, which can make approval easier. It does not cut the rate by itself.
- No collateral: micro and small firms get collateral-free bank loans up to ₹20 lakh, sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026.
- Bank KYC: the certificate is one of the proofs of business a bank accepts for a sole proprietor's current account.
Exporters gain one more: export sales are left out of turnover. Keep your IEC details current if you have one, and a FIRA for every foreign payment.
Independent professionals, sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies in India that export goods or services can apply for Xflow, subject to its terms. Every international transaction gets an eFIRA within 24 hours.
