An MSME certificate is the Udyam Registration Certificate: a free, permanent e-certificate from the Ministry of MSME that proves your business is a micro, small or medium enterprise. You get it on udyamregistration.gov.in, and it never needs renewal.
Udyam registration certificate: key takeaways
- The certificate is free and only comes from the official Udyam portal. Private sites with lookalike addresses charge for things the portal does at no cost.
- Your Udyam number appears when you submit the form; the e-certificate follows online, generally within 2 to 3 days.
- Share the plain certificate with buyers. The "Print with Annexure" copy also shows your PAN and bank account details.
- It never expires, but you must update your ITR and GST details each year, or your MSME status can be suspended.
- Your Udyam registration number has 19 characters in the form UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, not 16 digits as some guides say.
Find your situation below:
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You need a new certificate | Click "New Registration" on the Udyam portal and register free with Aadhaar and PAN |
| You lost the certificate or the number | Use "Print Udyam Certificate" or "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" under Print / Verify; both are free |
| A bank or buyer asks for it | Send the plain print, not the annexure |
| You want to check a supplier | Use "Verify Udyam Registration" with their number |
| Your category looks wrong | Read the year-wise rows on the certificate, then check that year's ITR and GST data |
| You still have an old Udyog Aadhaar | It stopped being valid after 30 June 2022; use "UAM Migration to Udyam" |
| You have several shops or units | Keep one certificate per PAN and add the units to it |
| You paid an agent | Download your own copy from the portal and check the details |
What Is an MSME Certificate?
An MSME certificate is the Udyam Registration Certificate, an e-certificate the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises issues online when a business registers on the Udyam portal. It carries a permanent registration number and the business's MSME category.
The MSME certificate full form is simply the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises certificate. Three names cause confusion:
| Name | What it is now |
|---|---|
| Udyam Registration Certificate | The current MSME certificate, since July 2020 |
| Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) | The old system; holders must move to Udyam |
| Udyam Assist Certificate | For informal micro enterprises, such as those outside GST; valid for priority sector loans |
If you have not registered yet, work through registration step by step, from the eligibility check to the certificate.
Who Can Get an MSME Certificate, and Which Category Are You?
Most businesses that make goods, provide services or trade can get an MSME certificate, in any legal form, if they fit within the medium limits. Your size depends on both what you have invested and what you sell.
That covers sole owners, partnership firms, family businesses (HUFs), LLPs, companies, co-operatives, societies and trusts. The form asks for the Aadhaar of the owner, the managing partner, the karta or an authorised signatory.
A few activities cannot register: crop farming (NIC 01, other than listed allied work such as poultry, bee-keeping and sericulture), forestry (02), fishing (03), and household or extra-territorial activities (97, 98, 99).
Traders can register, but only for priority sector lending.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
These limits apply from 1 April 2025. Both must hold, so crossing either one moves you up. Investment means the written down value of plant, machinery and equipment from your ITR; land, building and furniture do not count.
Getting paid from abroad: keep proof of every foreign payment. With Xflow, you can download an eFIRA (electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) within 24 hours of every withdrawal, at no extra cost.

Export sales are left out of turnover.
For example, a printing unit with ₹1.8 crore of machines and ₹14 crore of sales is small, not micro, because turnover crossed ₹10 crore.
If your numbers sit close to a limit, check which category you fall into before you file.
What Does the MSME Certificate Show?
The MSME certificate shows your Udyam registration number, business name, MSME category for each year, main activity, address, key dates and NIC codes. It is computer generated, so it needs no signature.
Here is each field on a current certificate, in the order it appears:
| Field | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Udyam registration number | Your permanent ID | 19 characters, starting UDYAM- |
| Name of enterprise | Your business or trade name | Matches your invoices and bank account |
| Type of enterprise | A table of classification year, category and date | The latest row shows your current category |
| Major activity | Manufacturing or Services; traders show Services | Matches what you actually do |
| Social category of entrepreneur | General, SC, ST or OBC | Matters for some schemes |
| Name of unit(s) and official address | Where you operate, with mobile and email | The mobile is the one used for OTPs later |
| Date of incorporation or registration | When the business was set up | Correct for your business type |
| Date of commencement | When production or business began | Not later than your first invoice |
| NIC codes | Your activities, at 2, 4 and 5-digit level | Every activity you bill for is listed |
| Date of Udyam registration | When you registered | Earlier than invoices you may need to claim on |
| Assistance contacts | Your District Industries Centre and MSME-DFO office | Who to approach for corrections |
| Dynamic QR code | Opens your record on the portal | Scans to the same details |
That table is also the best MSME certificate sample you will find. Real samples online belong to other businesses and show their private details, so do not rely on them.
Older certificates showed a single line such as "MICRO (Based on FY 2020-21)". Current ones show a year-by-year table.
Print or Print With Annexure: Which Copy Should You Share?
Share the plain print in most cases. The MSME certificate with annexure adds your full application, including your PAN and bank details. Give it only to a lender or tender body that asks.
Both options appear after you log in through "Print Udyam Certificate". What the annexure adds:
- Owner name, PAN and whether you have a GSTIN
- Bank name, IFSC and account number
- Employees by gender
- Investment and turnover by year, including export turnover
- Unit addresses, and the latitude and longitude of your official address
- Your GeM, TReDS and other portal opt-ins
A buyer checking that you are an MSME needs only the plain certificate. A bank assessing a loan may want the full figures.
What Does the Udyam Registration Number Mean?
A Udyam registration number has 19 characters in the form UDYAM-XX-00-0000000: the word UDYAM, two letters, two digits and seven digits.
Real numbers suggest the letters are the state and the first digits the district, though the portal does not explain the parts.
For example, a number starting UDYAM-TN-02 belongs to a business in Tamil Nadu. The old Udyog Aadhaar number had 12 characters, such as DL05A0000001.
The number never changes, even when your category does. You need it, with the mobile number you registered, to print, update or verify the certificate.
What Documents Do You Need for an MSME Certificate?
You upload no documents. You only type in details, and the Udyam portal checks them against Aadhaar, tax and GST records.
Keep these ready before you start:
- Aadhaar: of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with the mobile number linked for the OTP
- PAN: of the business (for a proprietor, their own PAN)
- GSTIN: only if GST law requires you to have one
- Bank details: account number and IFSC, copied from a cheque or passbook
- Business details: address, start date, number of employees and your NIC activity codes
Not sure of your NIC code? The form has a "Search NIC Code in Lesser Steps" box where you type a word such as "bakery" or "software" and pick the 5-digit code.
Use "Add Activity" for each extra line of work.
No Aadhaar yet? Visit your District Industries Centre or an MSME Champions office with your Aadhaar enrolment slip, voter ID, passport or driving licence. They help you get Aadhaar and register.
Small informal businesses outside GST can use the Udyam Assist Platform through a bank or other designated agency.
How Do You Get an MSME Certificate Online, and What Are the Fees?
You get an MSME certificate online by registering free on the official Udyam Registration portal with the owner's Aadhaar and the business PAN. MSME certificate fees are zero.
Your Udyam number appears when you submit, and the e-certificate is issued online, generally within 2 to 3 days.
Every answer you type becomes a line on your certificate, so the walk-through below shows where each one ends up. Keep the phone linked to the Aadhaar holder's number with you.
- Start a new registration. On the home page, under "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as Micro, Small & Medium", click "New Registration".
- Verify the Aadhaar. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name exactly as on the card. Tick the consent box, click "Validate & Generate OTP" and enter the OTP.
- Validate the PAN. Choose your type of organisation, such as Proprietary, Partnership or Private Limited Company, enter the business PAN and click "PAN Validate".
- Answer the ITR question. Say whether you filed an ITR for the previous year. If yes, the portal fetches your investment and turnover; these set the category row on your certificate.
- Basic Details. Mobile, email, social category, gender, Specially Abled and the enterprise name. The name and social category print on the certificate, and the mobile receives every later OTP.
- Official Address and Plant/Unit Details. Enter where you work and each unit. These print as your address and units, and the district decides your District Industries Centre.
- Other Details. Dates of incorporation and commencement, bank name, IFS code and account number, major activity, NIC codes, and persons employed by male, female and others.
- Opt-ins. GeM, TReDS, NCS, NSIC B2B and Skill India are optional. They show only on the annexure copy.
- Submit. Tick the declaration, click "Submit & Get Final OTP" and enter the OTP. Note the Udyam number on screen.
- Print. Once the certificate is issued, download it as shown in the next section.
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Aadhaar OTP | The Aadhaar has no linked mobile, or an old one | Update the mobile at an Aadhaar centre first |
| PAN fails to validate | Name or date on the PAN record differs from what you typed | Type it exactly as on the PAN, or correct the PAN record |
| PAN already has a Udyam | You or an agent registered it earlier | Recover it with "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number"; one PAN gets one certificate |
| Wrong category shown | It follows the ITR and GST figures fetched | Check the return itself; the form does not override filed data |
Need help? Call or WhatsApp the MSME Champions helpline on +91 8308809334 (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm) or email champions@gov.in.
If you register a firm, company or trust rather than yourself, the steps for each business type differ at the Aadhaar and PAN stage.
Use only the official addresses the portal lists: udyamregistration.gov.in, udyam.gov.in, msmeregistration.gov.in and udyamregistration with .com, .in, .co.in, .biz, .org or .info. One private lookalike has charged ₹1,499 plus GST to "recover" a Udyam number, which the portal does free.
How Do You Download Your MSME Certificate?
You download your MSME certificate free from the Udyam portal with your Udyam registration number and the mobile number you registered, verified by an OTP. You can download it as many times as you need.
- On the portal, open Print / Verify and choose "Print Udyam Certificate".
- Enter your 19-character Udyam registration number and the mobile number given in your application.
- Choose OTP on mobile or email, type the case-sensitive verification code shown on screen, and request the OTP.
- Enter the OTP and click "Validate OTP & Login", then choose "Print" or "Print with Annexure".
- Print the certificate or save it as a PDF from your browser.
If it does not work, try the fixes below, or the ones for less common download problems.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| OTP does not reach your phone | Choose the email OTP option instead. The OTP goes to the mobile in your Udyam form, which may differ from your Aadhaar mobile |
| You changed your mobile and email | Contact your District Industries Centre or the Champions helpline to update the contact details |
| You lost the Udyam number | Use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number"; it sends every number linked to your mobile or email by OTP |
| Verification code keeps failing | Match upper and lower case exactly, or load a fresh code |
| You have an old UAM number | It no longer prints a valid certificate; use "UAM Migration to Udyam" |
Is the MSME Certificate Valid for Life?
Yes. The MSME certificate validity is permanent and there is no MSME certificate renewal. The duty that remains is a yearly update, and the notification says failing to do it can lead to suspension of your MSME status.
In practice, the yearly update means filing your ITR and GST returns on time, because the portal reads them. After your ITR is filed each year, log in and check that a new row has appeared in the classification table.
Your category can change without a new certificate:
- It comes from your returns. The portal reads your ITR and GST data; only new businesses without an ITR self-declare.
- It can lag. The ministry has said the portal uses frozen data, for example 2019-20 figures for 2021-22. So a new category may appear a year or two late.
- Moving up: you keep the non-tax benefits of your old category for three years.
- Moving down: the new category applies from the next 1 April.
How do you update or correct your certificate?
For an MSME certificate update, choose "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration" from the portal's menu.
Log in with your number, registered mobile, OTP and verification code, edit the details, then submit with a final OTP. The same menu lets you close the registration if the business shuts.
- Change what has moved: address, mobile, email, units, NIC codes, employees or GSTIN.
- Click "Submit & Get Final OTP" and enter the OTP to save.
- Print a fresh copy through "Print Udyam Certificate". The Udyam number stays the same.
- What you cannot edit: the PAN and the Aadhaar holder are fixed. If either is wrong, ask your District Industries Centre or the Champions helpline how your case is handled.
- New phone number and no OTP? Ask your District Industries Centre or an MSME Champions control room for help with your details.
- Size looks wrong? Check the ITR and GST figures first. If the returns are right and the category still is not, raise it with your District Industries Centre or the Champions portal, with the ITR acknowledgement.
- Closing the business? The same menu lists cancellation. If your case does not fit, your District Industries Centre can help.
How Do You Verify an MSME Certificate or Check MSME Status?
MSME certificate verification is done on the Udyam portal under Print / Verify, then "Verify Udyam Registration", by entering the 19-character number and the on-screen verification code. No OTP is needed, so you can check a supplier's certificate too.
The result shows the enterprise name, its category and the registration details. Compare them with the PDF you were sent. If they differ, ask the supplier for a fresh print.
If you see no record, check three things:
- A typing slip, often the letter O typed for the digit 0
- An old Udyog Aadhaar number, which needs the separate "Verify Udyog Aadhaar" option
- A registration that was cancelled, or a number that was never issued by the portal
To check MSME status for your own business, scan the QR code on your certificate or log in with your number and mobile.
Where Does an MSME Certificate Actually Help?
The main MSME certificate benefits are faster payment from buyers, easier bank KYC and lending, and an edge in government tenders. Most apply only to micro and small enterprises. Traders get priority sector lending only.
| Where you use it | What it gets you | Condition | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening a current account | One of the two proofs of business the RBI lists for proprietors | Sole proprietors | Hand the plain print to the bank with your second proof |
| Bank loans | Priority sector lending; CGTMSE cover for micro and small | PSL: all MSMEs, including traders | Attach the certificate to the loan application |
| No collateral up to ₹20 lakh | Bank loans without security | Micro and small; loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026 | Quote the rule if the bank asks for security |
| Interest rate | Udyam does not set your rate; the lender still prices the loan | All MSMEs | Compare offers; the certificate helps eligibility, not the price |
| Late payments from buyers | Payment within the agreed term, never over 45 days | Micro or small, not trading; buyer in India | Put your Udyam number and terms on every invoice |
| Government tenders and GeM | Tender fee and EMD waiver, purchase preference under the Public Procurement Policy | Micro and small, not traders | Upload the certificate with your GeM profile or tender bid |
| Export credit | Interest subvention on rupee export credit (2.75% at launch) | Pilot for goods exporters with IEC and Udyam; capped at ₹50 lakh | Ask your bank when you take pre or post shipment credit |
What is the 45-day rule, and how do you claim late payment?
The 45-day rule under the MSMED Act means a buyer in India must pay a micro or small supplier by the agreed date, which cannot be more than 45 days after acceptance.
If nothing was agreed, payment is due in 15 days.
- Interest: late payment carries compound interest with monthly rests at three times the RBI Bank Rate. With the Bank Rate at 5.75% in October 2026, that is 17.25% a year.
- Buyer's tax: a business buyer who pays late can deduct the expense only in the year it pays (old section 43B(h)).
- Who is covered: micro and small manufacturers and service providers, for supplies made after the Udyam registration date. Not traders or medium firms.
- Where to claim: file on the MSME ODR portal (odr.msme.gov.in) with your Udyam number, invoices and order. It first offers online negotiation, then the state's MSE Facilitation Council.
Google's summary still points to MSME Samadhaan, but that portal now sends new cases to the ODR portal. The rule works best when each invoice states a due date, so set clear payment terms with every client up front.
If you bill clients abroad, the certificate also helps your bank KYC, and export earnings are left out of your turnover when your size is worked out. Keep a FIRA for each foreign payment as proof.
Xflow accepts sole proprietorships and other businesses that export goods or services, and provides an eFIRA within 24 hours for every international transaction.
Frequently asked questions
No. Registration is voluntary, but you need the certificate to claim MSME benefits such as the 45-day payment rule and tender exemptions.
Yes. A GSTIN is needed only if GST law requires you to register. You can add it later through an update.
Your Udyam number is generated the moment you submit the form. The e-certificate is issued online afterwards, and the Ministry's MSME Champions FAQ says this generally takes 2 to 3 days when PAN and GST details are used.
Two changes matter. Higher limits apply from 1 April 2025, with micro now up to ₹2.5 crore invested and ₹10 crore turnover.
The MSMED (Amendment) Act, 2026, signed in August 2026 and being brought into force in stages from October 2026, makes Udyam registration free and voluntary for every MSME.
There are few, but they are real:
- You must keep ITR and GST filings current, or the status can be suspended.
- The category can lag your real size by a year or two.
- Some large buyers prefer non-MSE suppliers to avoid the 43B(h) payment deadline.
- Medium enterprises and traders get few benefits from it.
No.
After three extensions, Udyog Aadhaar registrations stayed valid only until 30 June 2022. On the Udyam home page, choose "UAM Migration to Udyam", enter your UAM number and verify with the OTP sent to the mobile or email on the UAM.
No. A business can hold only one Udyam registration, linked to its PAN. Add every unit and activity to that one certificate.
Yes. Registering on the Udyam portal is the MSME registration, and the certificate is its proof.
