How to Renew Your MSME Certificate in 2026 (And Why Udyam Does Not Need Renewing)

There is no MSME certificate renewal, because an Udyam certificate never expires. Since Udyam Registration replaced the older system in July 2020, every certificate is issued once and stays valid for the life of the business.

There is no expiry date on it, no renewal button on the portal, and no renewal fee.

If you searched for how to renew your MSME certificate, what you almost certainly need is one of three things instead: the free annual update of your details, a modification when something changes, or a one-time migration if you are still on an old Udyog Aadhaar number.

This guide covers all three and the 2026 position.

Renewal, update or migration: which one do you actually need?

Most of the confusion comes from treating three different actions as one. They are not the same, and only two of them are ever mandatory.

ActionWhat it meansIs it mandatory?Cost
"Renewal"Does not exist for UdyamNo such processNot applicable
Annual updateRefresh your ITR and GST details each financial yearYes, every yearFree
Modify on changeEdit details when turnover, investment, address or activity changesWhen something changesFree
MigrationRe-register an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) number on the Udyam portalOne time, if still on UAMFree

Keep this split in mind as you read. Everything a "renewal" search is really asking about sits in one of the last three rows, and all of them happen on the one official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in.

Does an MSME (Udyam) certificate need renewal in 2026?

No. As of October 2026, an MSME certificate issued under Udyam Registration does not need renewal. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises built Udyam as a permanent, one-time registration.

Once your enterprise is registered on the official portal and you hold your Udyam Registration Number (URN), that registration stays active for as long as the business operates.

This is the clean break from the past. Under the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and the earlier EM-II paper filings, owners genuinely worried about validity and re-filing. Udyam removed that worry.

There is no renewal cycle to track and no lapse date to miss.

The direction of travel in 2026 reinforces this. The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Act, 2026, which received Presidential assent in August 2026, gives the Udyam Registration portal permanent statutory recognition and keeps digital registration free and voluntary.

Its provisions take effect from dates the Central Government notifies, and nothing in it introduces a renewal requirement.

So why do so many owners still search for a renewal process?

Because three real obligations feel like renewal even though none of them is: the yearly update of your tax figures, a status that can show as "Suspended" when details go stale, and old Udyog Aadhaar numbers that stopped working.

The rest of this guide works through each.

How long is an MSME certificate valid?

An Udyam certificate is valid for the lifetime of the enterprise. There is no fixed term such as one year or five years, and no expiry date is printed on it.

The certificate stays in force until the business is closed, cancelled or voluntarily deregistered.

The only way an active certificate loses standing is if you let the information go stale, or if the enterprise no longer meets the MSME definition after an update.

What "renewal" really means: the free annual update

Here is the obligation that most people are actually chasing.

Every enterprise with a Udyam Registration Number is required to update its information online each year, including details of the previous financial year's Income Tax Return (ITR) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) return, on a self-declaration basis.

The portal pulls most of this automatically once your PAN and GSTIN are linked. Investment in plant, machinery or equipment is read from your ITR data and excludes land and buildings.

Turnover is derived from your GST returns and excludes exports.

You confirm the figures rather than key them in from scratch, and the portal then re-checks you against the investment and turnover limits that were raised with effect from 1 April 2025. If you are unsure which band you fall in after that check, your MSME registration eligibility depends on those composite limits.

The one real deadline

The annual update window typically falls in the first quarter of the financial year, around April, once your ITR and GST filings are complete. Treat it as annual housekeeping tied to your tax filings, not a renewal you can forget.

Missing it does not expire your certificate, but it can push your Udyam status to "Suspended", which carries real costs covered further down.

Doing the update is short. On udyamregistration.gov.in, open "Update Details", enter your Udyam Registration Number, validate the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile or email, confirm your ITR and GST details, and submit. Your URN does not change.

For the full click-by-click walkthrough of the login and edit screens, follow the dedicated guide on how to update Udyam registration details.

When you only want the refreshed copy afterwards, the steps to Udyam certificate download cover the print and PDF options.

Still on an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM)? You migrate, not renew

If your business still relies on a pre-2020 Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) or EM-II registration, this is the single case that genuinely resembles renewal, and it is the reason many "renewal" searches exist.

The validity of those older registrations was extended several times and then ended, with the final cut-off in mid-2022. After that, they stopped being recognised.

You do not renew the old number. You register fresh on the Udyam portal to obtain a new Udyam Registration Number. UAM holders could carry their existing details into the migration, while EM-II holders generally had to register anew.

A common symptom here is a "Record Not Found" message when you try to update: it usually means the migration was never completed.

The fix is to get Udyam certificate afresh on the current portal rather than hunting for the old record.

Is your Udyam status "Suspended"? How to reactivate it

A status that reads "Suspended" or inactive usually means the information has not been updated for a prolonged period, not that your certificate has expired. You do not start over.

Log in through the same "Update or Cancel Udyam Registration" route, refresh your ITR and GST details for the current year, correct anything outdated, and submit. Once the latest data is validated, the status returns to active.

There is no reinstatement fee.

What does it cost, and what is the "renewal fee" scam?

Registration, the annual update and every modification are free on the government portal. The Ministry of MSME does not charge for keeping your details current.

Any demand for a "renewal", "update" or "processing" fee is a sign you are not on the official site.

This matters because the scam is widespread. Search results for MSME renewal are crowded with look-alike sites that mimic the portal and charge for a free service.

The Ministry of MSME has publicly cautioned against fake websites charging money in the name of facilitating registration.

What do you lose if you do not keep Udyam updated?

The certificate itself never expires, but neglecting the annual update has real consequences. A suspended status can cut off the benefits that made registration worth it in the first place:

  • Priority-sector, collateral-free lending, and the broader access that an active MSME Udyam loan depends on.
  • Protection against delayed payments under the MSME Samadhaan mechanism, which obliges buyers to pay a registered MSME within 45 days.
  • Government subsidies, scheme benefits and reserved public tenders that verify your Udyam details in real time.

The repair is always the same: log back in through the update route and refresh your ITR and GST data. There is no penalty "renewal fee", only the inconvenience of restoring your standing.

A note for services exporters

If you export services or software from India, keeping your Udyam registration current keeps your MSME benefits active, but it does not, on its own, handle how your overseas earnings land in your account or how you evidence them for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and GST. That realisation side is a separate compliance layer.

The foreign inward remittance certificate your bank issues for each inward payment is what GST refunds and export records rely on, and a cross-border payment platform that issues it automatically keeps that paperwork clean while your MSME benefits stay intact.

The bottom line

You do not renew an MSME certificate, because Udyam Registration never expires.

In 2026, keeping your certificate live means completing the free annual update with your ITR and GST figures, modifying details when they change, and, if you are still on an old Udyog Aadhaar number, re-registering on the Udyam portal.

Do that, use only udyamregistration.gov.in, and ignore anyone charging a renewal fee, and your certificate and your MSME benefits stay fully active with nothing to renew.
