MSME registration needs no documents to upload. You type in the right person's Aadhaar, the business PAN, your bank details and a GSTIN only if GST applies to you. The Udyam portal checks them against government records.
Udyam registration documents: key takeaways
- Nothing is uploaded on the Udyam portal. The government's own line is that the Aadhaar number is enough, with PAN and GST data fetched from its databases.
- Whose Aadhaar you use depends on the business: the proprietor, the managing partner, the karta of an HUF, or the authorised signatory of a company, LLP, society, co-operative or trust.
- A GSTIN is needed only if GST law requires your business to register. A freelancer under the threshold can register without one.
- Register only on udyamregistration.gov.in, where it is free. The site ranked first for this search on 15 October 2026 was a private consultancy charging ₹1,499 plus GST.
- Rent deals, power bills, bank statements, deeds and machine bills are for banks and loans. Udyam does not ask for them.
Find your situation below:
| You are | Aadhaar of | PAN of |
|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietor | Yourself | Yourself (it is the firm's PAN) |
| Partnership firm | The managing partner | The firm |
| Hindu Undivided Family | The karta | The HUF |
| Company, One Person Company or LLP | The authorised signatory | The company or LLP |
| Trust, society or co-operative | The authorised signatory | The organisation |
| Small informal business outside GST and income tax | Ask your bank, NBFC or microfinance lender to register you on Udyam Assist | Not needed |
What Documents Are Required for MSME Registration?
The documents required for MSME registration are details, not papers. You need an Aadhaar number for the OTP, the business PAN, your bank account number and IFSC, and a GSTIN if GST applies to you. Nothing is uploaded.
That is why the official Udyam Registration portal calls the process paperless. Your money figures come from your tax and GST returns once you enter the PAN.
You do sign one thing: a promise to show proof if officials later check your details. Keep your returns and records for that, not for the sign-up. With these details gathered, the MSME registration itself is a single online form.
MSME Registration Documents by Business Type
The documents required for Udyam registration are the same kind of details for every business type, but the Aadhaar and PAN come from different people. Companies and other bodies also add their GSTIN where GST applies.
Documents required for MSME registration for proprietorship
Use your own Aadhaar and your own PAN, because a sole proprietorship has no separate PAN. Add your GSTIN if you have one, and the details of the bank account your business uses.
The enterprise name can be your trade name, such as "Priya Designs", even though the PAN is in your personal name. The trade name is one of several choices a proprietor makes on the form.
Documents required for MSME registration for partnership firm
Use the managing partner's Aadhaar and the firm's PAN. The partnership deed is not uploaded; you only choose "Partnership" as the type of organisation.
The trap is the name. The enterprise name you type must match the name on the firm's PAN, not a shop board or a shortened version.
An unregistered firm can still register, because the form asks for the firm's PAN, not a registration certificate.
Documents required for MSME registration for private limited company
Use the Aadhaar of the authorised signatory, the company's PAN, and its GSTIN where GST applies. The certificate of incorporation, MOA and AOA are not uploaded. The same rule covers LLPs, trusts, societies and co-operatives.
A company with GST registrations in several states still files one Udyam. Every GSTIN under the company PAN is linked to it, and the turnover of all of them counts towards your size.
A company also has duties as a buyer from MSMEs, such as paying micro and small suppliers within 45 days.
Whatever the type, a business can hold only one Udyam registration, linked to its PAN. Add every unit and activity to that one registration.
What Does the Udyam Form Ask You to Type?
The Udyam form asks for identity, business, bank, activity and size details across six tabs, and most of them you already know. Use the table below as your msme registration documents list, tab by tab.
| Form tab | What to have ready |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar Verification | Aadhaar number, name as on Aadhaar, and the linked mobile for the OTP |
| PAN Verification | Type of organisation, PAN, and whether you filed last year's ITR; GSTIN if you have one |
| Basic Details | Mobile, email, social category, gender, Specially Abled (yes or no), enterprise name |
| Official Address | Office address with PIN; the district and District Industries Centre fill in from it |
| Plant/Unit Details | Each unit's name and address, if you work from more than one place |
| Other Details | Old EM-II or UAM number, date of incorporation, date business started, bank name, IFSC, account number |
| Other Details (continued) | Major activity, NIC codes, persons employed (male, female, others), investment and turnover |
Investment and turnover are mostly filled in from your ITR and GST data. A new business with no ITR yet gives its own figures as a self-declaration.
The last screen offers to sign you up for GeM, TReDS, the National Career Service, NSIC B2B and Skill India.
Tick TReDS if you sell on credit to large buyers, because companies over ₹250 crore turnover and central public sector firms must be registered on it. Tick GeM if you want government orders.
For major activity, the form offers only Manufacturing or Services. A trader picks Services and then a trading NIC code.
For the NIC code, use "Search NIC Code in Lesser Steps" or the 2, 4 and 5-digit drop-downs. Software work for clients is 62011, management consulting is 70200, and selling goods online is 47912, which counts as trading.
Graphic design sits under 7410, specialised design. Click "Add Activity" for each extra line.
How Do You Work Out Investment and Turnover for the Form?
Investment means what you have put into equipment and machinery, not land, buildings, furniture or fittings. Turnover means your yearly sales minus exports. For an existing business, the portal fills both from your ITR and GST returns.
- Existing business: investment is the written down value of equipment on 31 March of last year, as in your ITR.
- New business without an ITR: use the purchase invoice value of your equipment, without GST, new or second-hand. This self-declaration lasts until the 31 March after your first ITR.
- Exports: export sales are left out of turnover, so an exporter can stay micro with large foreign earnings.
Getting paid from abroad: keep proof of every foreign payment. With Xflow, you can download an eFIRA (electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) within 24 hours of every withdrawal, at no extra cost.
Your category then follows from the limits in force from 1 April 2025. A business must stay inside both limits for a category.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Say you start a design studio with a ₹2 lakh laptop and a ₹1 lakh camera, both bought with GST on top. You enter ₹3 lakh as investment, and turnover as nil or your sales so far. You are micro.
If a fetched figure looks wrong, it is because your ITR or GST return says so. Correct the return, then update Udyam; you cannot overwrite the fetched number on the form.
Which Details Must Match, or the Form Fails?
The Udyam form fails most often because a name, date or mobile does not match the Aadhaar or PAN record. Check each row below before you start, and fix the record first, not the form.
| If this does not match | What happens | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Your name versus Aadhaar | Aadhaar validation fails | Type it exactly as on Aadhaar, spelling and order included |
| Mobile not linked to Aadhaar | No OTP arrives | Link the mobile at an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre, then retry |
| Name or date on PAN | "PAN Validate" fails | Enter the PAN name and date exactly; if PAN itself is wrong, file a PAN correction request |
| IFSC | Bank details are rejected | Copy it from a cheque leaf or passbook, not from memory |
| PAN already used | The portal says a registration exists | Use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" under Print/Verify; do not register again |
An Aadhaar or PAN correction takes days, not minutes, so start it before the day you plan to register.
If you are stuck, call the MSME Champions helpline on +91 8308809334 (call or WhatsApp, Monday to Friday, 10 to 6) or visit your District Industries Centre.
Is GST Required for MSME Registration?
No, not always. A GSTIN is needed for MSME registration only if your business must register under GST law. The portal says "as per applicability of CGST Act 2017".
So MSME registration without GST works for a business below the GST threshold. That is ₹20 lakh a year for services (₹10 lakh in some north-eastern and hill states) and ₹40 lakh for goods-only sellers in most states.
Some sellers need GST from the first sale, whatever their size:
- anyone selling goods to buyers in another state
- most sellers of goods through e-commerce platforms (small sellers within one state may be exempt, so check before you list)
- a business that has chosen to register for GST voluntarily
A services exporter below ₹20 lakh can register for Udyam without a GSTIN. If you register for GST later, add the GSTIN through "Update Udyam Registration". Udyam itself does not change your GST position.
Can You Do MSME Registration Without Aadhaar?
Yes. MSME registration without Aadhaar goes through an office, not the website. A District Industries Centre or an MSME Champions control room, the Single Window points for Udyam, helps you get Aadhaar and finish the sign-up.
Take one of these documents with you, the ones the Udyam notification lists:
- Aadhaar enrolment slip, or a copy of your enrolment request
- Bank photo passbook
- Voter ID
- Passport
- Driving licence
To find your office, call the MSME Champions helpline on +91 8308809334 or write to champions@gov.in and give your district. The office helps you enrol for Aadhaar and files Udyam for you.
Your registration is completed once the Aadhaar number is issued.
A small informal business outside GST and income tax has another route: the Udyam Assist Platform. Here you share no documents.
Your bank, NBFC or microfinance lender registers you with your consent, and the certificate counts for priority sector loans only. You cannot apply on it yourself.
Once registered, you get a Udyam Assist Certificate with a number starting UDYAM-I. You can download it yourself on udyamassist.gov.in under Print / Verify, using that number and an OTP.
Which Documents Do You Not Upload, and Which Should You Keep on File?
You do not need address proof, bank statements, deeds or bills for Udyam registration. Many guides list them because banks ask for them later. The Udyam form has no place to upload them.
| Often listed | Needed for Udyam? | Where you actually need it |
|---|---|---|
| Rent agreement or electricity bill | No | Bank KYC, GST registration |
| Six months of bank statements | No | Loan applications |
| Partnership deed | No | Opening a bank account for the firm |
| MOA, AOA, incorporation certificate | No | Company bank KYC |
| Sale, purchase or machinery bills | No | Loan appraisal, or if asked to prove figures later |
| Paying an agent | No | Nowhere; registration is free |
Keep these on file instead. The form's declaration says you must show proof if officials later check your details:
- ITRs and GST returns behind your turnover
- Purchase invoices for your equipment, behind your investment figure
- Proof of your business address, such as a rent agreement or utility bill
- Your partnership deed or incorporation papers, if you are not a sole owner

What Documents Do You Need After MSME Registration?
After MSME registration, your Udyam Registration Certificate is the paper others ask for. Here is what each use needs.
| When | What you will need |
|---|---|
| Opening a bank account as a sole owner | Your KYC plus any two of eight proofs of business; the Udyam certificate counts as one |
| MSME loan | KYC, Udyam number, ITR, recent bank statements and GST returns if registered |
| GeM seller registration | PAN, bank account and IFSC; Udyam number and its linked mobile to claim MSE status |
| Government tenders | Udyam certificate for EMD exemption (micro and small only, not traders) |
| Delayed payment claim | Micro and small only: Udyam dated before the supply, work order or affidavit, invoices in one PDF, filed on the MSME ODR portal |
| Export interest subvention | Valid IEC, Udyam and a DGFT intent number; listed goods only |
Documents required for MSME loan
Lenders tend to want more paper as the loan grows, and each lender and government MSME loan scheme sets its own list. As a rough guide:
- Small Mudra-type loans: owner KYC, Udyam number, and 6 months of bank statements.
- Working capital or term loans: 2 to 3 years of ITRs, 12 months of statements, and GST returns if registered.
- Larger loans: audited financials, a project report and collateral papers, though bank loans to micro and small units up to ₹20 lakh sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026 need no collateral.
For a sole proprietor's current account, the bank needs any two proofs of business from an RBI list of eight.
Documents required for GeM registration
When we checked in October 2026, GeM said Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for seller registration and a GSTIN is not mandatory either. You need the business PAN (a proprietor uses their own), bank details, and your Udyam number.
- Create your seller account on gem.gov.in with the PAN and the mobile you want to use.
- In your seller profile, enter the Udyam number where GeM asks for MSE details.
- Enter the OTP sent to the mobile linked to your Udyam. GeM then shows you as a micro or small seller.
If that mobile has changed, update it on the Udyam portal first, then return to GeM. Tender exemptions cover the bid security (EMD) only, and micro and small enterprises still give a performance guarantee if the contract asks for one.
If you export, keep a FIRA for every foreign payment as export proof alongside your Udyam and IEC. Xflow accepts sole owners and other firms that export goods or services.
It gives an eFIRA within 24 hours for every international transaction.

The rule covers supplies made after your Udyam date, and not traders.
Your old UAM number and the mobile or email linked to it.
