There is no single MSME Udyam loan. Udyam registration is a free government ID that makes your business eligible for collateral-free, guaranteed and sometimes subsidised loans from banks, NBFCs and schemes; the lender still decides.
Udyam loan: key takeaways
- Udyam registration does not give you a loan by itself. It proves you are a micro, small or medium enterprise, which lenders and schemes use to decide what you qualify for.
- Banks cannot ask a micro or small business for collateral on loans up to ₹20 lakh sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026. The rule binds banks, not NBFCs or loan apps.
- CGTMSE guarantees collateral-free bank loans of up to ₹10 crore, for an annual fee that starts at 0.37% of the amount.
- Mudra loans go up to ₹20 lakh with no subsidy, and MUDRA has no agents. A Mudra "approval letter" that asks you to pay a fee is a scam.
- PMEGP offers the highest capital subsidy among the main MSME loan schemes, at up to 35% of project cost, but check that it is still open.
Find your situation below:
| You need | Best route | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| A small first loan, under ₹5 lakh | Mudra Shishu or Kishore | Apply at a bank; never pay an agent |
| A subsidy for a new unit | PMEGP | Check the scheme is open (see below) |
| ₹20 lakh to ₹10 crore without collateral | Bank loan with CGTMSE cover | Ask who pays the guarantee fee |
| A quick in-principle approval | PSB Loans in 59 Minutes | Approval is not disbursal |
| Credit as an exporter | Export credit with interest subvention | Needs both IEC and Udyam |
| A first venture as a woman or SC/ST founder | Mudra or a CGTMSE bank loan | Stand-Up India is closed until relaunched |
| Money fast from a loan app | Compare the APR first | Rates can be three to four times a bank's |
| A loan after a bank turned you down | Ask for the reason in writing, then try Mudra or a CGTMSE loan | Many applications at once lower your score |
Can You Get an MSME Udyam Loan on Your Certificate?
Yes, but the certificate is not the loan. A Udyam certificate makes you eligible for MSME lending rules and schemes; the bank or NBFC still checks your income, repayment record and business before it lends.
What Udyam changes for a borrower:
- Priority sector lending. Banks must lend a set share of their credit to priority sectors, with a separate target for micro enterprises. They classify the loan by your Udyam category, which depends on your investment and turnover.
- The ₹20 lakh collateral rule. It applies to micro and small enterprises, which Udyam proves you are.
- Access to schemes. Newer schemes, such as the micro enterprise credit card and the equipment loan guarantee, need a valid Udyam number.
What Udyam does not do: guarantee approval, fix your interest rate or replace your tax returns and bank statements. An offer of a "Udyam loan" just for holding the certificate fits the scam pattern described further down.
Not registered yet? Udyam registration is free and online, so do it before you apply.
Which MSME Loan Schemes Can a Udyam Holder Use?
The main MSME loan schemes for a Udyam holder are CGTMSE-backed bank loans, Mudra, PMEGP, and the newer credit card and equipment guarantee. They differ most on amount, collateral, subsidy and how long you get to repay.
| Scheme | Amount | Collateral | Subsidy | Repayment | Where to apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank loan with CGTMSE cover | Up to ₹10 crore | None needed | No | Set by the bank; working capital renewed yearly | Your bank |
| Mudra (PMMY) | Up to ₹20 lakh | None | No | Set by the lender, often a few years | Bank, NBFC or MFI branch or website |
| PMEGP | Projects up to ₹50 lakh | None within the RBI collateral-free limit | 15% to 35% | 3 to 7 years after a moratorium | KVIC PMEGP e-portal |
| Micro enterprise credit card | Up to ₹5 lakh | None | No | Revolving card limit | Your bank |
| Equipment loan guarantee (MCGS-MSME) | Up to ₹100 crore, for machinery | 60% of the loan guaranteed | No | Set by the bank | Your bank |
The credit card for Udyam-registered micro enterprises was announced in the 2025-26 Budget and, according to a Lok Sabha reply, launched in May 2026. The equipment guarantee scheme opened to service businesses in March 2026. For either, ask your branch's MSME desk by name.
What are the types of MSME loan?
MSME loans come in four main types, and the purpose decides which one you need.
| Type | What it pays for | Typical tenure | Scheme that can cover it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term loan | Setting up, expansion, premises | Several years, with an optional moratorium | CGTMSE, Mudra, PMEGP |
| Working capital (cash credit or overdraft) | Stock, salaries, the gap before customers pay | 12 months, renewed yearly | CGTMSE, Mudra, micro enterprise credit card |
| Invoice discounting | Cash against unpaid invoices from large buyers | Until the buyer pays | TReDS platforms |
| Equipment loan | Machinery and tools | Matches the life of the machine | MCGS-MSME, CGTMSE |
Invoice discounting works only if your buyer is on a TReDS platform too.
Companies with turnover above ₹250 crore and central public sector firms must be registered on one, so ask such buyers which platform they use, then sign up there with your PAN, bank details and Udyam number.
How Does a CGTMSE Loan Work?
A CGTMSE loan is a normal bank loan to a micro or small enterprise that a government trust guarantees, so the bank needs no collateral or third-party guarantor. Cover goes up to ₹10 crore per borrower at banks.
The guarantee covers a share of the amount in default:
- Micro enterprises with loans up to ₹5 lakh: 85%
- Women entrepreneurs: a higher share than the standard 75%; ask your bank for the current figure
- Most other borrowers: 75%
The annual guarantee fee rises with the loan:
| Guaranteed amount | Annual fee |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹10 lakh | 0.37% |
| ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh | 0.55% |
| ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore | 0.60% |
| Above ₹1 crore | Higher slabs; ask your bank for the current CGTMSE fee |
Small finance banks, regional rural banks and co-operative banks can cover loans only up to ₹2 crore under the scheme. Retail and wholesale traders are eligible too.
How do you get a CGTMSE loan?
You do not apply to CGTMSE yourself; you ask your bank to sanction the loan under CGTMSE cover, and the bank lodges the guarantee.
- Apply for the loan at your bank and say in the application that you want it under CGTMSE, without collateral.
- Submit the usual documents (listed in the eligibility section), plus your Udyam number.
- Ask three questions in writing: what share of the loan is covered, who pays the annual fee, and whether any security is still needed.
- Read the sanction letter. It should mention CGTMSE cover and the fee.
If the branch says no, ask for the reason in writing. Then raise it with the bank's MSME cell or grievance officer, or apply at another bank.
If the bank does not reply within 30 days, you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Mudra Loan, PMEGP Loan and Stand-Up India Compared
Mudra suits small loans with no subsidy, and PMEGP suits a new unit that wants a capital subsidy. Stand-Up India, meant for women and SC/ST founders, is closed until a revised version is notified.
Mudra loan
| Category | Amount |
|---|---|
| Shishu | Up to ₹50,000 |
| Kishore | ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh |
| Tarun | ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh |
| Tarun Plus | ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh, only after repaying a Tarun loan |
Mudra loans are for income-generating businesses in manufacturing, trading and services, and farm-allied activities such as dairy or poultry. MUDRA only refinances lenders and does not lend directly.
The ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh Tarun Plus band is what people call the "PM 20 lakh loan".
To apply, go to a bank, NBFC or microfinance branch, or the lender's website:
- Say which category you want: Shishu, Kishore, Tarun or Tarun Plus.
- Fill the lender's Mudra application form with the loan amount and purpose.
- Attach KYC, proof of business address, your Udyam certificate and quotations for any equipment.
- For Kishore and above, add 6 to 12 months of bank statements; for Tarun, also your ITR and accounts.
- Wait for the lender's appraisal and sanction letter, then sign and receive the money.
The interest rate is the lender's own, linked to its benchmark. If anyone outside the branch asks for a fee to "approve" a Mudra loan, stop.
PMEGP loan
PMEGP gives a margin money subsidy on new units: projects of up to ₹50 lakh for manufacturing and ₹20 lakh for services.
| Applicant | Urban subsidy | Rural subsidy | Own contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| General category | 15% | 25% | 10% |
| Special category (SC/ST, OBC, women, minorities and others) | 25% | 35% | 5% |
That 35% is the answer to "which loan has a 35% subsidy". For micro food processing units, PMFME also offers a 35% credit-linked subsidy.
Check the status first: PMEGP was approved up to 31 March 2026, and as of 15 October 2026 we found no official notice extending it.
A Rajya Sabha reply said further subsidy releases depend on approval to continue, so confirm on the KVIC portal or with your bank. If it is open, the steps are:
- On the KVIC PMEGP e-portal, choose the application for a new unit and register with your Aadhaar.
- Enter your details, the activity, the project cost and your category, and pick the implementing agency (KVIC, KVIB or DIC) and your bank branch.
- Upload a project report, your caste or special-category certificate if you claim the higher subsidy, and your educational certificate where the project needs it.
- The agency's district committee reviews the proposal and sends it to your bank, which sanctions the loan.
- Complete the entrepreneurship development training (EDP) before the loan is released.
The subsidy is kept with the bank as a term deposit for three years and adjusted against the loan if the unit is still running. Track your application with its ID on the same portal.
Stand-Up India
Stand-Up India supports bank loans of ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore for a first business set up by a woman or an SC/ST founder. You repay over up to 7 years, with up to 18 months before repayments start.
The scheme closed to new loans on 31 March 2025. In March 2026 the Finance Minister told the Lok Sabha that a revised version is being drafted.
Until it is notified (as of 15 October 2026), women and SC/ST founders can use Mudra or a CGTMSE-backed bank loan.
What Is the MSME Loan Eligibility, and Which Documents Do You Need?
MSME loan eligibility depends on the lender, but most ask for a valid Udyam number, a working business, filed tax returns and clean bank statements. RBI sets no minimum CIBIL score; each lender chooses its own.
How long you must have been in business varies:
- Mudra Shishu and PMEGP: new businesses can apply.
- Most bank term loans: typically one to three years of returns. A six-month-old business should start with Mudra Shishu or Kishore, or apply with a project report and a co-applicant.
- Loan apps and fintechs: often six months of activity.
Most lenders also want the owner aged roughly 21 to 65 at the end of the loan.
NBFCs commonly look for a CIBIL score of about 650 to 700, while banks set their own cut-off and also read the business's CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR).
If your score is low or you have no history, do these before you apply:
- Pull your free credit report and correct any wrong entries.
- Add a co-applicant with a stronger record, often a family member in the business.
- Start small with Mudra Shishu or Kishore and repay on time to build a record.
- Apply to one or two lenders, not ten: each application adds a hard enquiry to your report.
The MSME loan documents most lenders ask for:
- Udyam Registration Certificate details
- KYC of the owner and the business, including business address proof
- GST returns, often fetched through your GST login
- One to three years of ITR, with profit and loss statements
- Six months of bank statements, as PDF
- Details of existing loans
A new business without returns should add a project report: what you will make or sell, the costs, and how the loan will be repaid.
Make sure your Udyam details are up to date, since lenders read your category from it. You can change your address, GSTIN or activities online at no cost.
What Is the MSME Loan Interest Rate?
Bank MSME loans linked to the repo rate cost the bank's repo-linked rate plus a spread that depends on your credit score and the loan, while NBFC MSME loans we checked on 16 October 2026 listed 14% to 23.5%.
Loan apps can go far higher.
New floating-rate bank loans to micro and small enterprises must be linked to an external benchmark (EBLR), usually the RBI repo rate. That rate stood at 5.50% in October 2026, and loans reset at least every three months.
Your rate is the benchmark plus the bank's spread for your risk.
The gap between lenders can be large. On 15 October 2026, one NBFC app that uses "Udyam" in its product name listed 18% to 42% a year, plus a processing fee of up to 4.25%.
It is not a government scheme.
Here is what that difference costs on a ₹1 lakh loan repaid over 36 months (illustrative rates):
| Interest rate | Monthly EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 10% a year | ₹3,227 | ₹16,162 |
| 18% a year | ₹3,615 | ₹30,149 |
| 28% a year | ₹4,136 | ₹48,909 |
| 42% a year | ₹4,928 | ₹77,423 |
To judge a bank quote, ask the branch to write down three things: the benchmark it uses, its spread over that benchmark, and how often the rate resets. Get the same from a second bank.
For the same loan and tenure, the lower spread is the cheaper offer.
Always ask for the annual percentage rate (APR), which includes fees, and compare it with a bank quote before you sign. Also ask about the processing fee, the CGTMSE fee, prepayment charges and penal charges for late EMIs.
How Do You Apply for a Udyam Loan Online?
To apply for a Udyam loan online, use your bank's MSME loan page or the PSB Loans in 59 Minutes portal. There is no separate government "Udyam loan" form.
- Prepare. Register on Udyam if you have not, and keep your GST login, ITR files and six months of bank statements ready.
- Pick the route. Under ₹5 lakh and new: Mudra at a bank. A new unit that wants a subsidy: PMEGP. An existing business needing ₹20 lakh or more: a CGTMSE-covered bank loan.
- Apply on the bank's site or the portal, and share data through the GST and bank links it asks for.
- Get in-principle approval. On PSB Loans in 59 Minutes, the "59 minutes" refers to this step only.
- Wait for sanction. The bank runs its own checks and may visit your premises.
- Sign and receive the money. Disbursal follows once you sign the loan documents.
Using PSB Loans in 59 Minutes
PSB Loans in 59 Minutes, run with public sector banks and SIDBI, gives in-principle approval for MSME loans of up to ₹5 crore from your GST, ITR and bank data. Screen names can change, but the flow is:
- Sign up with your name, email and mobile, and verify the OTP.
- Choose a business loan and enter your GSTIN, then allow the GST data fetch with the OTP sent by the GST portal.
- Upload your ITR files, usually as XML, for up to three years.
- Connect your bank account through net banking or upload six months of statements as PDF.
- Enter owner details, loan amount and purpose, then pick your preferred banks and branch.
- Download the in-principle letter. Check any fee shown on screen before you pay it.
The branch then contacts you to collect documents and complete sanction.
How long does an MSME loan take, and how do you check its status?
In-principle approval can take minutes online, but sanction and disbursal usually take days to weeks, depending on the lender and the amount.
- In-principle approval: within the hour on PSB Loans in 59 Minutes; same day at many NBFCs.
- Bank sanction: usually a few weeks once your application is complete, longer for bigger loans. Ask the branch for its timeline in writing.
- Disbursal: often a few working days after you sign the documents.
To check your MSME Udyam loan status, use the application number in your bank's app or website, or the dashboard on PSB Loans in 59 Minutes. For PMEGP, use your application ID on the KVIC portal.
Udyamregistration.gov.in does not issue or track loans.
These are the common reasons applications stall:
| Why it gets rejected | The fix |
|---|---|
| Udyam details out of date or category wrong | Update Udyam before applying |
| Turnover in GST returns and ITR do not match | Reconcile the figures with your CA and explain any gap |
| Low CIBIL score or weak CMR | Start with a smaller Mudra loan or add a co-applicant |
| Existing EMIs too high for your income | Ask for a smaller amount or longer tenure |
How Do You Spot a Fake Udyam or Mudra Loan Offer?
A loan offer is fake if it asks for money before the loan, comes as an "approval letter" on WhatsApp, or claims to be from MUDRA or the MSME ministry. Neither lends directly or uses agents.
PIB Fact Check has flagged fake Mudra approval letters asking for "processing fees" of ₹350, ₹860 and ₹6,550 in 2026 alone. Check every offer against this list:
- No genuine lender asks you to pay a fee to a personal account or UPI ID to release a loan. Real fees appear in a written sanction letter.
- Government schemes never send approval letters on WhatsApp.
- The website is a bank's own site or a .gov.in portal, not a lookalike.
- Any loan app is run by a bank or an RBI-registered NBFC.
- Udyam registration itself is free; anyone charging for it is a private agent.
If you were targeted, report it on cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.
MSME Udyam Loan Options for Exporters
Exporters with both an IEC and a Udyam number get two extra routes: a 2.75% interest subvention on export credit and a dedicated guarantee window for larger loans.
- Interest subvention. Under the Export Promotion Mission, banks cut 2.75% a year off rupee packing credit and post-shipment credit.
- Limits. The benefit is capped at ₹50 lakh per exporter a year. Only goods on the scheme's notified list qualify, so ask your bank whether your HS code is on it.
- Register first. The subvention runs as a pilot, and the exporter registers its intent on the DGFT portal before drawing the credit.
- MCGS exporter window. Announced in March 2026 for profitable businesses that exported at least 25% of turnover in each of the last three years. It covers loans of up to ₹20 crore with a 75% guarantee.
Lenders judge an exporter on its export receipts, so keep a FIRA for every payment as proof, and check which document your bank issues.
Getting paid from abroad: keep proof of every foreign payment. With Xflow, you can download an eFIRA (electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) within 24 hours of every withdrawal, at no extra cost.
Xflow, which accepts sole proprietorships and other exporters, provides an eFIRA within 24 hours for every international transaction.
We checked these figures between 15 and 16 October 2026 against RBI, CGTMSE, KVIC, PIB and lender pages.
Frequently asked questions
Any micro, small or medium enterprise, including a sole proprietorship, that meets the lender's income and repayment checks. Udyam registration helps it qualify for MSME rules and schemes; a proprietor registers on Udyam with their own Aadhaar and PAN.
Yes, from a bank.
For a micro or small enterprise, an MSME loan without collateral is the rule on amounts up to ₹20 lakh sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026. The rule does not bind NBFCs or loan apps, and the bank still decides whether to lend.
No. Every MSME loan carries interest set by the lender. Only interest subvention schemes, such as the one for exporters, cut the rate, and subsidy schemes such as PMEGP reduce the amount you repay rather than the rate.
Yes, through Mudra Shishu, which covers loans up to ₹50,000, at a bank or its website. An app or caller that promises ₹50,000 against your Udyam number for an upfront fee is running the scam described above.
No central MSME loan scheme gives a 50% subsidy. PMEGP's 35% is the highest among the main ones. Some state schemes, often for women, offer higher shares on small loans, so check with your state industries department or DIC.
The RBI sets no minimum score, but most lenders check your personal CIBIL score and the business's CMR. The RBI has told lenders not to reject a first-time borrower only because there is no credit history.
