A Udyam name change is usually possible online, but the new name has to appear in your source records first.

Update the name on your PAN, GST or company records, then log in to the Udyam portal, open the edit screen and save the change. The updated Udyam certificate then shows the new name.

Your Udyam certificate does not stand alone.

It pulls key details from records held elsewhere, such as your PAN, your GST registration and, for companies and LLPs, the ROC. When those records still show the old name, the portal may not accept the new one, which is where most correction attempts get stuck.

Below you will find which details you can correct and which usually stay locked, and the order in which to fix your records.

It then walks through the portal journey, address and mobile changes, PAN or structure changes and the mistakes that cause delays, so you fix the record once and in the right place.

Which details a Udyam correction can change and which stay locked

The edit screen on the portal shows which fields are open for your registration, so treat the table below as a guide and check your own screen.

A Udyam correction online works best for details you control directly, such as contact details and business activities.

DetailWhere the change usually startsWhat to check
Enterprise nameYour PAN, GST or ROC record first, then the Udyam edit screenThe new name shows on the source record before you try
Address of the business or plantUdyam edit screenIt matches your GST registration if you have one
Mobile number and emailUdyam edit screen, after OTP loginYou can still receive the OTP on the old contact
Business activity (NIC code)Udyam edit screenAdd new activities to the same record
PAN and Aadhaar detailsCheck what your own edit screen allowsConfirm with the Udyam helpdesk before you try

So, can you change the name in an MSME certificate? Usually yes, as long as the new name already sits on the record the portal checks against.

Looking for the yearly update instead?

Updating your Udyam details each year after filing your ITR is a separate task from a correction. The guide to updating your MSME certificate covers that yearly update and the category limits.

Fix PAN, GST and ROC records first, then correct the Udyam certificate

A Udyam certificate correction is the last step, not the first. The Udyam record draws on your PAN-linked details, so it is safest for the new name to reach those records before the Udyam record follows.

  • Company or LLP: get the name change approved by the ROC first, then update the name on your PAN and GST registration.
  • Partnership firm: update the firm name on the PAN and the GST registration first, as they usually need to agree before you touch Udyam.
  • Sole proprietor: your PAN carries your own name, so a "business name" change usually means a new trade name. Update the trade name on your GST registration first, if you have one.
  • Only then: log in to the Udyam portal and correct the enterprise name.

Trade name vs proprietor name

For a sole proprietor, the name on the PAN is the person, and the enterprise name on Udyam can be a trade name such as "Priya Designs". Changing the trade name does not change the proprietor name, and the proprietor name cannot be swapped for someone else on the same record. The sole proprietorship guide explains how the two names relate.

How to change the name in your Udyam certificate on the portal, step by step

Once your source records show the new name, the correction itself takes a few minutes. The table follows the order of the journey, from login to the new certificate.

StepWhat you doWhat to watch for
1On the official Udyam portal, choose Update/Cancel Udyam Registration and log in with your 19-character Udyam Registration Number (URN) and the registered mobile OTPUse only the government site, not a look-alike
2Open the edit option and find the enterprise name fieldIf the field is locked, your source record has not caught up yet
3Enter the new name exactly as it appears on PAN, GST or ROCSpelling, spacing and suffixes such as "Pvt Ltd" must match
4Review the other details and save the change as the screen directsFix any other outdated field in the same session
5Download the updated Udyam certificateCheck that the new name appears on the certificate

The login clicks are the same as for any update, and the guide to updating your MSME certificate lists them.

Your Udyam Registration Number (URN) sits at the top of your certificate, and the Udyam registration number guide shows how to find it if you have lost it.

After saving, you can download the updated certificate and verify the corrected record to confirm the new name shows.

Documents to keep ready

A Udyam registration name change is mostly online, so keep proof of the new name to hand rather than a stack of papers.

  • Name change proof: the updated PAN, the amended GST registration certificate or the ROC approval, whichever applies to you.
  • Login details: your URN and access to the registered mobile number or email.
  • Supporting records: a recent bank statement or invoice in the new name, useful if a bank or client asks for consistency.

The matching rules from your first registration still apply, and the MSME registration documents guide sets them out.

What a Udyam correction costs

Udyam registration itself is free on the government portal, so confirm on the portal screen before paying anything for a correction. A site that charges to change your MSME name is a private service, not the government.

How to do a Udyam address change on the same portal

A Udyam address change follows the same login as a name change. Log in with your URN and OTP, open the edit option, and update the official address or the address of each plant or unit.

  • Use the full address: enter the flat or building, road, city, district, state and PIN code as they appear on your other records.
  • Match GST if registered: amend your GST registration first when the principal place of business moves, so the two records agree.
  • Moving state: if the business shifts to another state, check how your edit screen handles the state field before you save.

Udyam mobile number change

Your mobile number is how the portal confirms it is you, since the login OTP goes to the contact details in your application.

If you can still receive an OTP on the old number or the email, log in and update the mobile number on the edit screen. If you have lost both, the certificate download guide explains how to get help.

Udyam correction when your PAN changes or the business changes structure

A new PAN usually comes with a new legal entity, for example when a sole proprietorship becomes a private limited company or an LLP. The portal does not publish a self-service rule for moving a Udyam record to a new PAN, so do not assume you can simply edit it.

  • One record per enterprise: an enterprise can hold only one Udyam registration, and new activities are added as NIC codes, not a second registration.
  • Ask before you act: contact the Udyam helpdesk or your nearest MSME-DFO office and confirm whether your case needs an update or a fresh registration for the new entity.
  • Old Udyog Aadhaar numbers: if you still hold a Udyog Aadhaar number, the Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam migration guide covers that route.

If your business has never been registered, start with Udyam registration instead.

Common mistakes that stall a Udyam correction

Most failed corrections come down to a few avoidable slips.

  • Changing Udyam before the source record: the name field may stay locked or the change may not save. Fix PAN, GST or ROC first.
  • Typing a slightly different name: a missing "LLP" or an extra space creates a fresh mismatch with your GSTIN and bank records. Copy the name exactly.
  • Losing the registered mobile: without the OTP you cannot log in. Update the mobile number while you still have access.
  • Paying a middleman: the government portal does not charge for registration, and paid look-alike sites are not the government. There is also no yearly renewal fee, as the MSME certificate renewal guide explains.

How Xflow helps once your Udyam details match your business

Once your Udyam certificate, PAN, GST and bank account carry the same name, your export paperwork can carry it too. Xflow helps Indian freelancers and small businesses receive payments from clients abroad.

  • Currencies: clients can pay in 25+ currencies, including USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, AED and SGD.
  • Payout: funds reach your Indian bank account in INR.
  • Paperwork: each withdrawal comes with an eFIRA, the proof of inward remittance used for export records. The FIRC vs FIRA guide explains how it differs from a FIRC.

Getting your Udyam details right

A Udyam name change is quick once your PAN, GST or ROC record shows the new name. Fix the source record first, then correct the Udyam record through the portal and download the new certificate.

For PAN or structure changes, confirm the route with the helpdesk before you edit anything.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in most cases. You can log in to the Udyam portal with your registration number and an OTP, then edit the fields that are open for your record and save the changes.

No. An enterprise can hold only one Udyam registration. Extra business activities are added to the same record as NIC codes.

Correcting your Udyam name promptly is good practice, so that your Udyam certificate matches your PAN, GST and bank records. Ask the helpdesk if you are unsure whether your case needs it.

A correction edits your existing record, so the registration number is not expected to change. A fresh registration for a new entity would come with a new number.

Registration is free on the government portal, so check the portal screen before paying anyone for a correction. Be wary of any website that charges for it.

Once you save the changes, you can download the updated certificate from the portal. Check that the new name appears before you share it.

The new company has its own PAN, so this is usually treated differently from a simple name correction. Confirm with the Udyam helpdesk or your MSME-DFO office before you act.
