If your business still holds an old Udyog Aadhar (UAM), it stopped being valid MSME proof after 30 June 2022. Udyog Aadhar to Udyam registration is free on the official portal, using your UAM number and an OTP to the mobile or email you gave when you filed it.
Udyam migration: key takeaways
- Udyog Aadhar numbers lapsed after 30 June 2022, after three extensions. Banks and buyers now ask for a Udyam number instead.
- Do your Udyog to Udyam migration only on udyamregistration.gov.in, using "UAM Migration to Udyam". The government charges nothing, so any fee is a private agent's.
- The first OTP goes to the mobile or email filled in on your old UAM, not to your Aadhaar mobile. Check you can still reach one of them before you start.
- You cannot edit a UAM any more. Migrate first, then make every change through the Udyam login.
- MSME benefits such as the 45-day payment rule run from your Udyam registration date. Supplies made while you held only a lapsed UAM are not protected.
Find your situation below:
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You have the UAM number and its mobile or email | Use "UAM Migration to Udyam" on the portal home page |
| Your UAM was filed for you by the District Industries Centre | Use "Assisted UAM Migration" instead |
| The UAM mobile and email no longer work | Try "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" first, then register fresh on Udyam |
| You lost your UAM number | Check the old certificate or emails, or use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" |
| You are not sure if you already migrated | Try "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number"; if a Udyam number comes back, use it |
| You had several UAMs for different units | Keep one Udyam for the business and add the other units to it |
| Your proprietorship became a company or LLP | Register fresh on Udyam with the new entity's PAN |
| You only have an old EM-II acknowledgement | Register fresh on Udyam as a new enterprise |
Is Udyog Aadhar Still Valid in 2026?
No. Udyog Aadhaar validity ended on 30 June 2022, so the registration no longer counts as MSME proof. Udyam migration means registering the same business again on the Udyam portal, starting from the old UAM number.
The Udyam rules of June 2020 told every holder of a Udyog Aadhar registration or EM-II to register again on Udyam. The deadline was extended three times before it ran out.
| Notification | What it did | UAM valid until |
|---|---|---|
| S.O. 2119(E), 26 June 2020 | Launched Udyam and told existing holders to register again | 31 March 2021 |
| S.O. 2347(E), 16 June 2021 | First extension | 31 December 2021 |
| S.O. 278(E), 19 January 2022 | Second extension | 31 March 2022 |
| S.O. 2134(E), 6 May 2022 | Final extension | 30 June 2022 |
Many guides still give one of the earlier dates, or say old certificates remain valid. Neither is right today. The migration option itself is still open in 2026; only the UAM's validity ended.
An old UAM certificate now proves only that the business filed a memorandum before July 2020.
What you lose while you have only a UAM
Until you migrate, you have no current MSME registration. In practice that means:
- Late payments: the MSMED Act's 45-day rule and interest claims need a Udyam registration. The Supreme Court held in Silpi Industries (2021) that they cover only supplies made after you register.
- Loans: banks classify MSME loans, including priority sector lending, using your Udyam certificate (RBI, August 2020). Give your bank the new one for any loan booked under your UAM.
- Tenders: government buyers check MSE status through Udyam for tender fee and EMD exemptions.
- Buyers: companies that file MSME Form 1 report dues to micro and small suppliers, and most ask for your Udyam certificate before treating you as one.
The fix takes one sitting, so the cost of waiting is every month of supplies left unprotected.
Check You Still Qualify Before You Migrate
Most UAM holders still qualify, but not all. Udyam judges size on both investment and turnover, with higher limits than the UAM rules, and a few activities cannot register at all.
| Category | UAM era, manufacturing (investment only) | UAM era, services (investment only) | Udyam from 1 April 2025 (investment and turnover) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹25 lakh | Up to ₹10 lakh | Up to ₹2.5 crore and ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹5 crore | Up to ₹2 crore | Up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹5 crore | Up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore |
Udyam counts both numbers: you move up a category if either crosses its limit. Export turnover is left out, and the figures come from your ITR and GST data.
- Bigger than medium now: a business above ₹125 crore of investment or ₹500 crore of turnover cannot register on Udyam.
- Traders: retail and wholesale traders can register since July 2021, but the benefit is limited to priority sector lending.
- Excluded activities: crop farming (except listed allied work), forestry, fishing, household activities and foreign embassies cannot register.
If you still qualify, go ahead with Udyog Aadhar to Udyam registration. If you no longer do, keep the old UAM certificate only as history.
UAM vs Udyam: what changes when you migrate
| Feature | Udyog Aadhar (UAM) | Udyam registration |
|---|---|---|
| Size test | Investment only | Investment and turnover together |
| Data source | Your own figures | Self-declared, then updated from ITR and GST data |
| PAN and GSTIN | Not required or checked | PAN required; GSTIN where GST applies |
| Registrations allowed | Several per Aadhaar | One per enterprise, with units added |
| Validity | Lapsed after 30 June 2022 | Permanent, no renewal |
| Certificate | Printed with UAM number and mobile | e-certificate with a dynamic QR code |
The practical effect: your category is set by data the government already holds, so keep your returns filed and accurate.
How to Convert Udyog Aadhar to Udyam Registration: Step by Step
You convert Udyog Aadhar to Udyam through the "UAM Migration to Udyam" option. Enter the UAM number, verify an OTP sent to the UAM's mobile or email, then complete the Udyam form.
Before you start
- Your UAM number: 12 characters, two letters, two digits, one letter and seven digits, such as DL05A0000001.
- Access to the mobile or email you gave in the UAM, for the first OTP.
- The Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with its linked mobile at hand.
- The business's PAN, and its GSTIN if GST law requires you to register.
- Your latest ITR figures, plus bank details and NIC codes for every activity. Udyam works on self-declaration, but your figures are checked against ITR and GST data.
The portal asks for no uploads. Ignore lists of bills, deeds or MoA on other sites.
The steps
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in and click UAM Migration to Udyam, under "For those already having registration as Udyog Aadhar Memorandum".
- Enter the number in the "Udyog Aadhaar Number" box exactly as printed, letters included.
- Choose OTP on Mobile as filled in UAM or OTP on Email as filled in UAM. Email is pre-selected, so switch if your mobile is the one you can reach.
- Click Validate & Generate OTP, then enter this first OTP.
- Next, the form asks for the owner's Aadhaar, as in a new registration. Expect an OTP to the mobile linked to that Aadhaar.
- Enter the PAN and click "PAN Validate", then fill the GSTIN, bank and business details. Some UAM details may already appear.
- Check the investment and turnover figures the portal fetches from your ITR and GST data. Udyam uses today's limits, so your category may differ from the one on your UAM.
- Check every field, especially the enterprise name, address, bank account and the NIC codes for each activity, then submit with the final OTP.
- Note the Udyam Registration Number shown on screen. It is your new permanent number.
Screen order can vary slightly from a fresh registration, but the details asked for are the same.
If the migration form stops you
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| UAM number rejected | Wrong format, a space, or an EM-II number | Retype it as on the certificate; EM-II holders register fresh |
| OTP never arrives | The UAM mobile or email is no longer yours | Switch to the other option; if neither works, register fresh |
| PAN already registered | The business already has a Udyam number | Use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" to get that number back instead of migrating again |
| Aadhaar name does not match PAN | Spelling differs between records | Correct the PAN through the PAN service portal or the Aadhaar through myAadhaar, then retry |
| Asked for a GSTIN you do not have | GST registration is not compulsory for you | Answer that you have no GSTIN; add one later through an update |
Assisted UAM Migration: Who Is It For?
Assisted UAM Migration is for Udyog Aadhar memoranda that were filed for the business by the District Industries Centre, usually because the owner had no Aadhaar at the time.
It is not a route for owners who simply lost their UAM mobile.
Under the old UAM system, District Industries Centres were allowed to file memoranda offline or on behalf of owners without an Aadhaar number. Those UAMs were filed through the DIC rather than by the owner online.
The "Assisted UAM Migration" button on the portal home page, under "UAM through Assisted filing", is meant for them.
If your UAM was filed this way, use that button and keep the UAM number and certificate ready. If the OTP or details asked for do not reach you, contact the District Industries Centre that filed it.
The official MSME Champions helpline can also guide you on +91 8308809334 (call or WhatsApp, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm).
What If Your UAM Mobile and Email No Longer Work?
If you cannot receive an OTP on the mobile or email in your UAM, the UAM to Udyam migration option will not let you in.
The practical fix is a fresh Udyam registration in your own name, using today's Aadhaar, PAN and contacts.
- Try both contacts first. Switch the OTP option between mobile and email. Many owners still have the email even after changing phones.
- Check you have not already registered. If a Udyam was filed for the business since 2020, recover it under "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" instead of creating a duplicate. Its OTP also goes to the contacts on file.
- Register fresh if both fail. Use "New Registration" on the portal home page. A business may hold only one Udyam registration, so do this once.
- Lost the UAM number itself? Check the old certificate or acknowledgement, saved portal emails, or bank and loan files. "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" can also return it, with an OTP to the UAM's contacts.
- Keep the old UAM certificate with your records. It shows the business's history if a bank or buyer asks.
A fresh registration gets the same benefits from its registration date as a migrated one. What you lose is only the link to the old UAM record, which no longer counts for anything on its own.
Several UAMs, a Changed Business, or an Old EM-II
Each of these cases ends in one Udyam registration per enterprise, but the route differs.
The rule is in the Udyam notification: no enterprise may file more than one Udyam registration, and all its activities and units go into that one.
| Your case | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several UAMs, one per unit or activity | Migrate one UAM, then add the other units and activities through "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration" | UAM allowed many memoranda per Aadhaar; Udyam allows one per enterprise |
| Proprietorship that became a company or LLP | Register fresh on Udyam with the new entity's PAN | A new legal entity has a new PAN and needs its own registration |
| Old EM-II acknowledgement only | Register fresh as a new enterprise | The migration form accepts only the UAM number format |
| Both an old UAM and a Udyam already | Keep the Udyam; do not migrate the UAM again | A second Udyam would be a duplicate registration |
The Ministry's own data shows this at work. By March 2021, about 5.56 lakh UAMs had migrated into about 5.01 lakh Udyam registrations, which suggests businesses with several UAMs ended up with one.
To add the other units, log in through "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration" with your new Udyam number and an OTP. Add each unit under the plant or unit locations and each activity as an NIC code, then submit.
Do not migrate the remaining UAMs separately.
Udyog Aadhar Update and Old Certificates: What Still Works
A Udyog Aadhar can no longer be updated. Edits to UAM ended in 2021, and the "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration" login accepts only a 19-character Udyam number, so entering a UAM there will fail.
To change anything, migrate first and then update the Udyam.
A few old UAM pages still load under Print/Verify. Here is what each one does now:
| Portal option | What it does now | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Print UAM Certificate | Prints the old certificate once you enter the UAM number and the mobile number on that UAM | That a memorandum was filed before July 2020 |
| Verify Udyog Aadhaar | Confirms a UAM number exists | The same history, not current MSME status |
| Update/Cancel Udyam Registration | Edits a Udyam registration only | Nothing for a UAM |
How to print your old Udyog Aadhar certificate
- On udyamregistration.gov.in, open Print/Verify, then Print UAM Certificate.
- Enter the UAM number and the mobile number on that UAM.
- Type the verification code and print or save the PDF.
If that mobile is no longer yours, you cannot print it, and that is fine: the certificate is a record, not proof.
A buyer or bank that checks the old number on the portal will see a lapsed memorandum, so migrate or register fresh instead.
After You Migrate: Your New Udyam Number and Certificate
When you submit, the portal shows your Udyam Registration Number in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. The e-certificate follows online, generally within 2 to 3 days per the Ministry's Champions FAQ.
- Save the number straight away. You need it for every login.
- Print the certificate under Print/Verify, then Print Udyam Certificate, with an OTP to the mobile or email you gave in the Udyam form. Our Udyam certificate download steps cover OTP and login problems.
- Tell your buyers and bank the new number and its date, and ask them to replace the UAM in their records.
- Put the Udyam number on invoices from now on, with a payment term of 45 days or less.
- Keep it current. Your ITR and GST data add a new enterprise type row each classification year. Change other details through "Update/Cancel Udyam Registration", as explained in our guide to updating a Udyam registration.
If you export, your bank will want the new certificate and proof of each foreign payment for its records.
Businesses in India that export goods or services can apply for Xflow, subject to its terms, and every international transaction gets an eFIRA within 24 hours.
Free Official Migration vs Paid Sites
Udyam migration is free on the official portal. Several lookalike sites that rank for these searches are private consultancies that charge a fee to do the same job, and some ask for things you should never hand over.
| Warning sign | What it means |
|---|---|
| A price, or a price shown only after you submit details | A private agent; the government charges nothing |
| A request to upload your Aadhaar card | The portal never asks for an upload |
| Consent to share OTPs or "passcodes" | Stop; the OTP gives access to your registration |
| An "Update Udyog Aadhar Certificate" service | That option no longer exists on the portal |
The official site opens at udyamregistration.gov.in, udyam.gov.in and msmeregistration.gov.in. If you were charged or misled, raise a complaint on MSME Champions or call +91 8308809334. Everything an agent sells is part of the free MSME registration process.
Frequently asked questions
Registration itself is voluntary, but a lapsed UAM gives you no MSME status. If you want MSME benefits such as payment protection, priority loans or tender exemptions, you need a Udyam registration.
Without one, buyers and banks will treat you as a non-MSME.
Yes. Udyog Aadhaar migration to Udyam is still open, and the "UAM Migration to Udyam" form is live in 2026. The deadline ended the UAM's validity, not the option to migrate.
You get a new number in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, and benefits start from the day you migrate. So the sooner you do it, the fewer supplies are left unprotected.
Plan on benefits running from your Udyam registration date. The Supreme Court has held that MSMED Act protection covers only supplies made after registration. Supplies made between 30 June 2022 and your Udyam date are not covered.
Check the "Date of Udyam Registration" on your certificate and use that date in any payment claim.
No. A Udyam registration has no expiry, unlike the deadlines that ended UAM. You update it only when your details change, and your ITR and GST data refresh your category each year.
Keep the mobile and email in it current. They are the only way to log in, print and update later, which is exactly what traps many UAM holders today.
Yes, if GST law does not require you to register. Since 1 April 2021, PAN is required for Udyam, and GSTIN only where GST registration is compulsory.
You can add a GSTIN later through an update if you register for GST.
Nothing changes on it. You cannot cancel a UAM; it simply stays lapsed and printable as a record.
Share only the new Udyam certificate with buyers, lenders and government offices, and replace the UAM number in their vendor forms. If a buyer still holds your UAM, they may not treat you as an MSME at all.
