Udyam Registration Number Format and How to Find or Recover It

The Udyam registration number is the permanent identity number the Ministry of MSME issues to every registered micro, small or medium enterprise in India.

It follows the pattern `UDYAM-XX-00-0000000`: the word UDYAM, then two letters, two digits and seven digits, which is 19 characters with the hyphens and 16 without.

If you have registered but cannot find the number, you do not need to apply again or pay anyone to retrieve it. The official Udyam Registration Portal returns it for free.

You ask for a one-time password (OTP) sent to the mobile number or email you gave when you applied, and the portal then shows your number.

You get one number for the life of the business.

Keep your Udyam certificate, the registered mobile and email, and the PAN you registered with somewhere safe, because those are what let you recover the number quickly if you ever lose it.

What Udyam registration is and why you get a number

Udyam registration is the Ministry of MSME's free, paperless way for a business to be recognised as a micro, small or medium enterprise, and the number is your proof of it.

You register once on the official portal, which then issues a certificate, a QR code and your permanent number.

For how to sign up, see our full guide to Udyam registration.

Understanding the Udyam number and its 19-character format

Your Udyam registration number always has the same shape: `UDYAM-XX-00-0000000`. It opens with the fixed word UDYAM, then a block of two letters, a block of two digits and a block of seven digits, with a hyphen between the blocks.

This permanent number is your Udyam Registration Number, or URN.

BlockWhat you seeCount
UDYAMthe fixed word UDYAM5 letters
XXtwo letters2 letters
00two digits2 digits
0000000seven digits7 digits

Add up the letters and digits and you get 16 characters; add the three hyphens and you reach 19. That is why the same number is described as both 16 and 19 characters, and sometimes as 12, which is actually the length of the old Udyog Aadhaar number.

Udyog Aadhaar numbers (12 characters, letters and digits) belong to the old system and are not Udyam numbers, so old holders had to register afresh on Udyam to get a URN. See our guide to moving from Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam.

## How to recover a forgotten Udyam registration number by OTP

The quickest way to deal with a forgotten Udyam registration number is the recovery page on the official portal. It sends an OTP to the contact details on your application and then displays your number on screen.

The recovery page asks for no payment, and you do not start a fresh registration.

Before you begin, have the mobile number or email you used when you first registered to hand, because the portal only sends the code to those.

If that contact detail is no longer yours, skip to the other recovery routes after the steps.

Find Udyam number by mobile or email OTP, step by step

To find your Udyam number through the official portal, work through these steps:

  1. Open the official Udyam Registration Portal in your browser.
  2. Go to Print / Verify and choose Forgot Udyam/UAM Number
  3. Select Udyam Registration, or Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum if you held the older type.
  4. Choose whether the OTP goes to the mobile number or the email you entered in your application.
  5. Enter that mobile number or email and click Validate & Generate OTP.
  6. Enter the OTP you receive and click Validate OTP.
  7. The portal then shows all your registered numbers on screen.

Other ways to recover your number when the OTP route fails

If the OTP route will not work, for example because you no longer use the mobile number or email on the application, a few other routes may help.

Treat the unofficial ones as worth a try rather than a guarantee, and never pay a third party to get your own number.

  • Check your certificate: The number prints in full on your Udyam certificate next to a QR code, so any saved PDF or printout you have will show it.
  • Search your email: Look through your inbox, including the spam folder, for any mail from the portal sent around the time you registered.
  • Use the portal's contact options: If you have lost the registered mobile and email, check the help or contact details on the official portal or helpdesk rather than any agency that asks for a fee.
  • Ask whoever filed it: If an accountant or consultant registered the business for you, they usually keep the number and the login details on record.

Documents that show or ask for your MSME registration number

Your Udyam registration number prints on your Udyam Registration Certificate, beside a QR code that opens your enterprise details on the portal when scanned.

You can download the certificate from the portal whenever you need a copy, and verify any number against the official records.

Several forms then ask you to quote the MSME registration number, sometimes under a field labelled Udyam Registration No. The common ones are:

  • Bank and loan paperwork: Lenders and schemes aimed at small businesses often ask for it to confirm that you are a registered MSME.
  • Delayed-payment complaints: The MSME Samadhaan portal, which now points new applications to the MSME ODR portal, asks for your registration type and number.
  • Tender and scheme applications: Applications for public tenders and support schemes often use the number as proof of your MSME status.

A proprietor's registration sits under the proprietor's own PAN, and there is one number for each enterprise. For the papers you need when you first register, see our list of MSME registration documents.

How to spot look-alike sites that charge for Udyam services

Udyam registration is free on the government portal, and the recovery page asks for no payment, so any site that charges a fee to get or retrieve your number is not the official one.

To register yourself for free, follow our step-by-step MSME registration guide.

The Ministry of MSME states on the portal that there is no fee, and that no other website, app, agency or person is authorised to register MSMEs on your behalf.

The official address is udyamregistration.gov.in, which ends in .gov.in. Look-alike sites usually use .org or .com and dress themselves up to look official.

Before you enter any details, check the web address in your browser and watch for these warning signs:

  • It asks for a payment: You should never have to pay to register or to retrieve your own number.
  • The address is not .gov.in: Treat any other domain as a private site, not the government portal.
  • It promises faster approval for a fee: Paid "fast-track" or "agent" services are not part of the official, free process.

How Xflow fits in once your MSME details are in order

Once your Udyam details are sorted, the number mostly sits in the background until a form or a lender asks for it.

If you export services or goods and receive payment from overseas, it helps to keep your business records consistent, so your invoices, your Udyam certificate and your bank details all line up.

At Xflow, we handle cross-border payments for Indian exporters who receive money from overseas customers.

We are authorised by the Reserve Bank of India as a cross-border Payment Aggregator (PA-CB), with final authorisation (the fully approved stage, past in-principle) as of February 2026.

We make an electronic FIRA, or eFIRA, available with every withdrawal at no extra cost. It is digital proof of an inward remittance, listing the sender's details, the exchange rate, the rupee equivalent and the purpose code.

Keeping the eFIRA with your Udyam certificate and invoices gives you a clean paper trail for every export payment.

Frequently asked questions

Find it free on the official portal: go to Print / Verify, choose Forgot Udyam/UAM Number, request an OTP to your registered mobile or email, and the portal shows the number on screen.

It is both. The number is 16 characters without the hyphens and 19 with them. The figure 12 you sometimes see is the 12-character length of the old Udyog Aadhaar number, not the Udyam registration number.

No. Udyog Aadhaar is the older system, with 12-character numbers. Udyam numbers follow the UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 pattern, and old Udyog Aadhaar holders had to register again on Udyam to get one.

Use the Print / Verify option on the official portal to print or download your Udyam certificate. The certificate carries your number and a QR code.

Register free on the government portal with your Aadhaar and PAN, and the system issues your certificate and number.

Yes. The portal states: "Registration Process is totally free. No Costs or Fees are to be paid to anyone." The recovery page also asks for no payment.

Any website or agency that charges a fee to register or retrieve your number is not the official one.

No. The number is permanent and needs no renewal. You keep the same number for the life of the business.
