A partnership firm can register on Udyam online, free of cost, using the managing partner's Aadhaar and the firm's PAN. Udyam registration for partnership firm owners runs the same paperless, self-declaration way as for any micro, small or medium enterprise, so you upload no partnership deed and pay no fee.
You apply once on the official Udyam Registration Portal. The managing partner verifies their Aadhaar with a one-time password, because the password goes with that Aadhaar.
The firm's PAN is then validated against government records, and the portal issues a certificate with a QR code and your permanent registration number.
Registering comes down to two short checklists: what the firm must have ready and what the managing partner must do in person. An LLP is treated differently, grouped with companies rather than following this partnership route.
Documents and details needed for MSME registration of a partnership firm
MSME registration for partnership firm owners needs two kinds of input. The firm supplies its own tax and business details, and the managing partner supplies their personal Aadhaar for the identity check.
Nothing is uploaded, because the portal is paperless and runs on self-declaration.
Keep the firm's details ready first:
- Firm PAN: The firm's own Permanent Account Number is needed, so the registration sits under the firm's PAN.
- GSTIN where it applies: A GSTIN has been required since 1 April 2021, as per the applicability of the CGST Act and the Ministry notification S.O. 1055(E), so you provide it unless your firm is exempt under those rules.
- Business details: Keep the firm's address, main activity and bank details handy, as the later tabs of the form ask for business information (confirm the exact fields on screen).
- Investment and turnover figures: The portal takes these from the linked income-tax and GST records, so you do not calculate them yourself, but it helps to know roughly where the firm sits.
Then the managing partner needs their own identity details:
- Their Aadhaar number and name: The portal rule is plain: the Aadhaar number shall be that of the managing partner in the case of a partnership firm, so it is their Aadhaar and their name as on Aadhaar that go into the form.
- Access to the Aadhaar one-time password: The managing partner gives consent on screen and completes the OTP check, so they need to be available to receive the code at the Aadhaar step.
The Aadhaar step asks for one person's Aadhaar and one name only, the managing partner's. No other partner's details are requested on that step, so the other partners have nothing to enter there.
For the wider list of papers you may want on hand, see our guide to MSME registration documents.
Udyam registration steps for a partnership firm, and the partner's part
For Udyam registration for partnership firm owners, the whole process runs as one online session on the official portal. The managing partner needs to be available for the Aadhaar check, because the one-time password goes with that Aadhaar.
The other partners have no action listed in the portal rules.
Work through these steps:
- Open the official Udyam Registration Portal and, under the entry marked "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as Micro, Small & Medium", start a new registration.
- On the Aadhaar Verification tab, enter the managing partner's Aadhaar number and name, agree to the consent declaration, and complete the one-time password (OTP) check. This is the step that uses the managing partner's Aadhaar.
- Move to the PAN Verification tab and enter the firm's PAN. The portal validates it and pulls linked tax details from government databases, so you do not type investment or turnover figures by hand.
- Fill in the firm's remaining details across the Basic Details, Official Address, Plant/Unit Details and Other Details tabs, entering the business details each tab asks for.
- Submit the completed form. The portal processes the registration and issues your certificate online, carrying the Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a QR code.
The Aadhaar step asks only for the managing partner, and the portal rules list no action for the other partners. For a general walkthrough of the portal beyond the partnership case, see our full guide to Udyam registration.
How partnership firm inputs differ from proprietorship and company registration
The portal uses the same form for every business type, but whose Aadhaar it asks for changes with the type.
A proprietorship uses the proprietor's Aadhaar, a partnership uses the managing partner's, and a company or trust registers through its authorised signatory. The PAN and GSTIN rule is otherwise shared across types.
| Entity type | Aadhaar used | PAN and GSTIN |
|---|---|---|
| Proprietorship | the proprietor's Aadhaar | PAN and GSTIN as applicable |
| Partnership firm | the managing partner's Aadhaar | the firm's PAN; GSTIN unless exempt |
| HUF | the karta's Aadhaar | the HUF's PAN; GSTIN unless exempt |
| Company, cooperative, society or trust | the authorised signatory provides the Aadhaar (per the portal) | the organisation's own PAN and GSTIN |
So the main thing that sets Udyam for partnership firm owners apart is the identity of the person whose Aadhaar is used. Our separate guides cover the detail for a sole proprietorship and for a private limited company.
An LLP is grouped with companies and uses its authorised signatory, not a managing partner, so check your MSME registration eligibility and follow the company route rather than this one.
MSME classification limits that apply to a partnership firm
A partnership firm is classified the same way as any other enterprise, on investment and turnover together.
The limits below apply from 1 April 2025, and whichever category your firm falls into decides the micro, small or medium label on the certificate.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
You do not pick a category yourself. The portal reads your investment and turnover from the linked tax records and assigns the category, so the figures on the certificate follow your filed returns.
Points to remember before you file the Udyam form
A few portal rules save you trouble and money, and they matter most before you start. The portal states it plainly: "Registration Process is totally free.
No Costs or Fees are to be paid to anyone." Any site or agent that charges for Udyam registration for partnership firm owners is not the official one.
- One enterprise, one registration: A firm files a single Udyam registration. You can add any number of activities, manufacturing or service, under that one registration rather than filing again.
- Old registrations must re-register: If the firm held a UAM or EM-II registration, it must register afresh on Udyam rather than carry the old one over.
- Do not pay third parties: No private website, app or agency is authorised to register your firm, so use only the official portal at udyamregistration.gov.in.
After you register: your Udyam certificate, name match and partner changes
Your Udyam certificate is issued online once the registration is processed. It carries your registration number and a QR code that opens your enterprise details on the portal, and there is no renewal to track or pay for.
You can download the Udyam certificate for partnership firm registrations at any time from the Print/Verify menu, and our guide to the Udyam certificate walks through that.
Keep the firm's name the same across its PAN, GST registration and bank account, so the details line up.
Changing a partner is less clear-cut. The portal pages do not set out a step for a change of managing partner or partners, so treat the routes below as what to check rather than a confirmed procedure:
- The Update/Cancel login: Sign in to Update/Cancel Udyam Registration on the portal, and see what the firm's details allow you to edit.
- The MSME helpline: Call or WhatsApp the official helpline on +91 8308809334 (Mon to Fri, 10:00 AM to 06:00 PM) to ask how a partner change is recorded.
- Your local MSME office: The single-window help desks and your District MSME office (MSME-DFO) can guide a change the online form does not cover.
Where Xflow fits for an MSME exporter after Udyam registration
Once your Udyam details are sorted, the registration mostly sits in the background until a lender, scheme or buyer asks for it.
If your firm exports services or goods and receives money from overseas, it helps to keep your records consistent, so your invoices, your Udyam certificate and your bank details all line up.
At Xflow, we handle cross-border payments for Indian exporters who receive money from overseas customers.
We are authorised by the Reserve Bank of India as a cross-border Payment Aggregator (PA-CB), with final authorisation (the fully approved stage, past in-principle) as of February 2026.
We make an electronic FIRA, or eFIRA, available with every withdrawal at no extra cost. It is digital proof of an inward remittance, listing the sender's details, the exchange rate, the rupee equivalent and the purpose code.
Keeping the eFIRA with your Udyam certificate and invoices gives your firm a clean paper trail for every export payment.
