How to Pay for Claude from India: Pro, Max, Team and API

One USD card for your AI and SaaS bills

Top up once and pay Claude, AWS and other USD vendors from virtual cards, one per team if you want them.

If you are working out how to pay for Claude from India, you can now pay directly in Indian Rupees (INR).

Claude bills Pro and Max in rupees with the goods and services tax (GST) included, and Claude Pro costs from ₹2,000 a month, as reported at launch.

On the website, you pay by international-enabled credit or debit card. Claude's checkout does not support direct UPI payments. UPI works only through mobile app store billing, where Google Play or the App Store runs the checkout.

The API console is still billed in USD, and because the rollout is partial, some accounts still see dollar prices.

Which Claude subscription in India suits you: Pro, Max, Team or API

Claude is sold through separate plans, and each one suits a different buyer with its own rules on currency and cards.

Before you look for a way to pay, match your reason for buying to the right plan, because a Claude subscription in India that fits one person won't cover a team, and neither covers code.

PlanWho buys itHow it is billedCurrencyAccepted payment
Claude Pro or MaxOne person: freelancers and individual professionalsPro monthly or annual, Max monthly, on the web or in the appINR since July 2026 where the rollout has reached you; some accounts still see USDCredit or debit card on the web; app store billing, where UPI can work
Claude TeamA business with 2 or more usersPer seat, monthly or annual, on one bill run by the adminINR on localised accounts, per seatCredit, debit or prepaid card; no ACH bank transfer
Claude EnterpriseLarger organisations with custom termsPer seat plus usage, billed annuallyUSD list price; confirm local billing with AnthropicCard or ACH on self-serve; invoicing through Anthropic's sales team
Claude APIDevelopers and technical teamsPay-as-you-go prepaid creditsUSDInternational-enabled card, or monthly invoicing agreed with Anthropic's sales team
  • Claude Pro or Claude Max, for your own work - Pro is the personal plan for freelancers and solo professionals, even when a client or employer reimburses the bill. Max is also personal, with 5x or 20x Pro's usage for heavier work. Neither adds admin controls, and Anthropic's terms bar sharing one login.
  • Claude Team or Claude Enterprise, for a company - Team is for a business buying seats for its staff, with an admin who manages members and pays one central bill. It needs at least 2 seats and a business email. A solo freelancer can't buy a one-seat Team plan. Enterprise suits larger organisations wanting custom terms.
  • Claude API, for building software - The API is for developers who call Claude from their own apps and tools. You buy prepaid usage credits in the Anthropic Console at console.anthropic.com and pay as you go, with each model priced by the amount of text your code sends and receives.

How to pay for Claude from India, step by step

To pay for Claude from India, pick the route that matches your plan:

  • Pro or Max on the web - Pay by international-enabled card at claude.ai.
  • Pro or Max in the app - Pay through Google Play or the App Store, where UPI can work.
  • Team - Your admin sets it up with a business email and pays for every seat on one card.
  • API - Buy credits separately in the Anthropic Console, because a Pro or Max plan doesn't cover API usage.

How to buy Claude Pro in India on the website

On the web, you set up a Claude Pro subscription in India from your own account settings, and the same steps work for Max.

  • 1. Sign in at claude.ai - Use the account you want the plan on, since the subscription sits with that login.
  • 2. Open Settings - Click your name or initials at the bottom left, then choose Settings.
  • 3. Go to Billing - The path is Settings → Billing → Upgrade.
  • 4. Choose your plan and cycle - Pick Pro or Max. Pro offers monthly or annual billing, while Max is billed monthly.
  • 5. Enter your card - Use a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card enabled for international online use. PayPal and bank transfers aren't accepted.
  • 6. Approve the payment - Complete the 3-D Secure/OTP step from your bank in one go, without leaving the page.

Annual billing charges the full year upfront (USD 200 on the US list price). Check that your card's limit for international online use covers it before you start.

How to make a Claude UPI payment through the mobile app

When you subscribe inside the Claude app on Android or iPhone, Anthropic hands billing to the store. Google Play or the App Store handles your payment, and you manage the payment method and receipts in your store account.

That's why UPI can work here and not on the website, since the store runs its own checkout.

Google supports UPI on Google Play for all providers, including subscriptions and UPI Autopay renewals, and a UPI app such as Google Pay (GPay) can fund it.

Apple lists UPI, Visa and Mastercard for Indian accounts, with net banking available for adding funds to your Apple Account balance. The app price may differ slightly from the web price, and you cancel through the store.

One caution: skip resold "Claude Pro accounts" sold for UPI at a discount. Anthropic's consumer terms say you may not make your account available to anyone else, and a shared login puts your chats and your access at risk.

Setting up Claude Team billing and seat pricing as the company admin

The admin sets up Team billing once, with a business email and at least 2 seats, and every seat bills to one card.

StepWhereWhat to know
Create the teamclaude.ai/login with a business email, or claude.ai/upgrade from an existing planPersonal addresses such as gmail.com or yahoo.com are rejected
Add seatsTeam onboardingMinimum 2 seats; Team isn't meant for individual use
Pick a cycleDuring setupMonthly or annual billing
Add the payment methodOrganization settings → Billing, by the OwnerCredit, debit or prepaid card; ACH isn't accepted

If you outgrow Team, self-serve Enterprise adds ACH bank transfer, and invoicing is available when you buy Enterprise through Anthropic's sales team. Enterprise is billed annually either way.

On Team, the practical choice for an Indian company is which card the Owner adds, because every seat bills to that one card.

A company credit card or a prepaid card funded for the purpose keeps the bill off staff members' personal cards.

Buying Claude API credits in the Anthropic Console

Claude API credits are prepaid in USD from the Console's Billing page, and only a user with the Admin or Billing role can buy them.

  • 1. Open Billing - In the Console, go to Settings → Billing.
  • 2. Buy credits - Click "Buy credits", enter the amount in USD and confirm.
  • 3. Set auto-reload if you want it - In the Auto-reload section, click Edit, switch it on, and set a minimum balance and a reload amount.
  • 4. Watch the expiry - Credits expire one year after purchase and are non-refundable. Buy close to what you expect to use.

Accounts with a larger, steady spend can ask Anthropic's sales team about monthly invoicing, which bills your usage through a Stripe invoice at month end. Until then, the card on file carries every top-up.

Make sure it's enabled for international online use before you switch on auto-reload.

How Claude API pricing works for developers paying from India

Claude API pricing is set per million tokens, in USD. A token is a small piece of text, roughly three-quarters of an English word, so 1 million tokens is about 750,000 words.

You pay separately for input tokens (what your code sends: the prompt, instructions and any documents) and output tokens (what Claude writes back), and output costs five times as much as input on every model.

Anthropic charges these rates as of September 2026:

ModelInput, per 1M tokensOutput, per 1M tokensOne request (2,000 in, 1,000 out)1,000 such requests1,000 requests in INR, with a 3.5% card markup
Claude Fable 5.1USD 10USD 50USD 0.070USD 70about ₹6,948
Claude Opus 5.5USD 4USD 20USD 0.028USD 28about ₹2,779
Claude Sonnet 5USD 2USD 10USD 0.014USD 14about ₹1,390
Claude Haiku 4.5USD 1USD 5USD 0.007USD 7about ₹695

The sample request is a typical support-style call: about 1,500 words of prompt and context in, and a reply of about 750 words out.

Rupee figures use the 25 September 2026 mid-market rate of 1 USD = 95.9 INR plus a 3.5% card markup, before GST on that markup.

To estimate your own bill, work out tokens per request, multiply by the number of requests, then apply the rate:

  • Cost per request = (input tokens × input price + output tokens × output price) ÷ 1,000,000.
  • A worked month - an app making 1,000 of these requests a day on Sonnet 5 runs 30,000 requests a month, which is USD 420, or about ₹41,688 on a card with a 3.5% markup.
  • Batch processing - jobs sent through the Message Batches API, which returns results asynchronously rather than instantly, are billed at 50% of the standard rates.
  • Prompt caching - when many requests reuse the same long instructions or documents, cached input is read back at a tenth of the normal input price, which cuts the input side of repeat calls.
  • Check your real usage - the Console's usage page shows tokens and spend by model, so you can compare the estimate with what you are actually charged.

A dollar bill works differently from a rupee plan, because your bank adds a foreign exchange markup of 3.5% on many ICICI and HDFC cards, according to their own fee schedules.

That applies to every API top-up and to any plan your account still bills in USD. Budget for it on top of the token price.

Why the Claude India pricing you see may differ from launch reports

Claude India pricing is still rolling out. TechCrunch reported that local pricing "has begun to appear for some users" and that app prices "vary slightly" from the website.

Compare the price in the app with the price on the web before you choose where to subscribe.

Which currency is your Claude plan billed in?

Open Settings → Billing and check the currency on your latest receipt. If it shows USD, your bank's dollar markup applies to every charge.

For an individual, the GST inside a rupee price is the tax India applies to OIDAR services, meaning online services from abroad, and you don't add it again.

Even a rupee charge can carry a bank fee: HDFC lists a 1.75% markup in its card terms when a foreign merchant bills in INR. Check your first statement.

If you pay by credit card, tax collected at source (TCS) generally doesn't apply to the charge.

International credit card spend is still outside the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) after the government deferred the 2023 change on 28 June 2023, and the rules on TCS on foreign remittance apply when an individual sends money abroad by bank transfer under LRS.

What to check before you pay for Claude from India

Many failed Claude payments trace back to a setting you can fix before checkout. Check each of these first, especially if you're paying in dollars for Team or the API.

  • International online use is switched on - New and reissued Indian cards ship with overseas online transactions disabled by default. Turn it on in your HDFC, SBI, ICICI or Axis app, and check the online channel specifically, because some apps switch on only in-store use.
  • Your billing address matches the bank's record - Enter the billing address exactly as your bank holds it, because a mismatch is a common reason for a decline. Claude sets your billing address from your payment method, and that address decides the tax charged.
  • The card type suits the plan - Claude payment methods differ by plan: Pro and Max on the web take credit or debit cards, and Team also takes prepaid cards. For the API, use a card enabled for international payments.
  • Your phone is ready for the OTP - Keep your registered mobile to hand, because most Indian banks ask for 3-D Secure/OTP on a first charge from a merchant abroad.
  • There's enough balance, with a buffer - On a debit or prepaid card, leave room over the price, since a dollar charge also carries the bank's markup plus GST on foreign exchange charges.
  • Your business billing details are in place - A Tax ID field may appear under Settings → Billing depending on your location. Before you rely on it, confirm with Anthropic support and your CA how the invoice treats GST on software services for your GSTIN.
  • Your VPN is off at checkout - A connection that appears to come from another country can trip fraud checks on an Indian card. Pay from your normal network.

Claude card declined? Why some Indian cards fail at checkout

When Claude shows "your card was declined", the cause usually sits with your card settings or your bank's rules.

Anthropic takes payments through Stripe, and a charge from a merchant abroad passes extra checks on the bank's side before it reaches Claude.

What makes an Indian card fail at Claude's checkout

An Indian card can fail at Claude's checkout for any of these reasons, and each has its own fix:

  • International online use is off - Under an RBI circular of 15 January 2020, cards issued or reissued after 16 March 2020 work only for domestic use until you switch overseas online use on. Switch it on in your banking app.
  • Authentication on recurring charges - RBI's 2026 e-mandate framework lets recurring card charges up to ₹15,000 skip the extra step once an e-mandate is registered with your bank. If a renewal from a merchant abroad isn't set up as an e-mandate on your card, it can still ask for an OTP or fail. Complete 3-D Secure (3DS) when asked, and re-add the card if a renewal fails.
  • Address or location mismatch - A billing address that doesn't match the bank's record can be declined, and so can a connection that doesn't match the card's country. Copy the bank's address exactly and turn off any VPN.
  • A RuPay card - Stripe doesn't list RuPay among its supported card brands, so use a Visa or Mastercard.
  • A debit or prepaid card - Some issuers keep separate international and online switches on debit and prepaid cards, and these must be on for a foreign charge. Otherwise, try a credit card or a card type the plan lists.

Using a USD virtual card for Claude Team and API bills

If your business pays for Claude Team seats or API credits in dollars, we designed the Xflow virtual card for this kind of bill.

You fund Xflow Payments Inc. from your Indian bank by USD SWIFT or NEFT/RTGS, and the balance sits on a prefunded US-issued USD virtual card that only your business uses.

Add it in Team billing or the Console, with the billing address shown for your card in the Xflow Dashboard.

Try a small API credit purchase first, before you move seats onto the card. The card doesn't change where Stripe sees you connecting from, so a location check can still apply.

If you're a freelancer on Pro or Max, the rupee price is usually the simpler route, and our guide to virtual cards for SaaS subscriptions sets the card beside the other ways to pay.

How to manage Claude and your other USD software bills together

Once the first payment clears, the job is keeping renewals and top-ups clearing. Claude Team renews on the cycle you chose, API auto-reload tops up whenever your balance drops below the threshold, and unused API credits expire after a year.

Running Claude alongside your other dollar software on one dashboard

With Xflow, every card payment shows in the Xflow Dashboard, which puts Claude in one view with the rest of your USD software, and you can pay any global SaaS vendor from the same balance.

  • Give API spend its own card - Auto-reload can draw on the card at any time, and keeping it apart from seat billing stops a top-up from blocking a renewal. With Xflow you can give each department its own card under one dashboard.
  • Keep every USD tool in one place - If Claude isn't your only dollar bill, the same card and dashboard can carry your design and cloud tools, and we've written up how to pay for Adobe from India.
  • Note renewal dates as you add tools - A renewal that hits an empty balance fails like any declined card. Our guide on how to pay for AWS covers the same routine for usage-based cloud bills.

Claude GST and tax notes for businesses paying Anthropic from India

  • GST reverse charge - A GST-registered business pays IGST on Claude itself under the reverse charge and can generally claim input tax credit on it. An unregistered individual pays GST inside the rupee price instead.
  • TDS - TDS usually doesn't apply to a plain software subscription, following the Supreme Court's 2021 ruling in Engineering Analysis. Our guide on TDS on foreign payments covers the wider rules.
  • Filings on the funding transfer - Paying Claude by card isn't a remittance filing, but funding Xflow Payments Inc. by bank transfer is a remittance. Form 15CA and 15CB can apply, and your bank will ask for a purpose code for outward remittance.

Confirm how each of these applies to your business with your CA.

Picking the right Claude payment route for your plan

For Pro or Max, pay in rupees on claude.ai with an international-enabled credit or debit card. If you'd rather use UPI, subscribe in the Claude app instead, where Google Play or the App Store runs the checkout.

For a team, the admin buys at least 2 seats and pays for every seat from one company card, and prepaid cards are accepted.

For the API, you buy prepaid credits in USD in the Anthropic Console, where a USD card funded from India is one route.

If Claude sits among several dollar tools, the same routine applies to a Microsoft 365 payment from India. Keep one list of renewal dates and owners so a lapsed card doesn't take a tool offline mid-cycle.

A simple way to track SaaS subscriptions keeps those dates current.

Frequently asked questions

Expect a RuPay card to fail at Claude's web checkout. Anthropic takes payments through Stripe, and Stripe's list of supported card brands doesn't include RuPay. Use a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card enabled for international online use instead.

A Claude UPI payment isn't available on the website. It can work only when you subscribe in the Claude app, because Google Play or the App Store runs that checkout, and both list UPI as a payment option in India.

Paying without a credit card is possible. The website accepts debit cards for Pro and Max, the mobile app can use UPI through Google Play or the App Store, and Team also accepts prepaid cards.

Debit cards are accepted for Pro and Max. A decline usually means international online use is switched off, the 3-D Secure/OTP step failed, or the billing address doesn't match your bank's record. Fix those, then try again.

Claude Free costs nothing and lets you try Claude with lower usage limits than Pro. Check claude.com/pricing for the current limits before you decide to upgrade.

Claude Pro is the standard personal plan, from ₹2,000 a month billed annually, as reported at launch. Claude Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage, from ₹11,999 a month, for heavier use.

Anthropic calculates tax from your billing address, and a Tax ID field appears in Billing settings in some locations. Check whether your account shows one, then confirm with Anthropic support and your CA how the invoice treats your GSTIN.

Sharing a Claude account isn't allowed. Anthropic's consumer terms say you may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else. A company that needs several users should look at Team, which starts at 2 seats.
