How to Get Paid From Udemy in India as an Instructor

Get paid directly by students abroad

Receive international payments at the mid-market rate, settled to your Indian bank the next business day.

To get paid from Udemy in India, choose PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti as your approved payout method in your Udemy payout settings, submit your tax form (Form W-8BEN), and link an account in your name.

Udemy pays you in US dollars, and each method converts them to rupees at a different cost.

The three methods reach your Indian bank in different ways:

  • Via PayPal - Udemy pays your PayPal balance in US dollars, and PayPal converts the money to rupees when you withdraw to your linked Indian bank account.
  • Via Payoneer - Udemy pays your Payoneer account in US dollars, and Payoneer withdraws the money to your Indian bank in rupees.
  • Via Tipalti (Local Bank Transfer) - Tipalti, which Udemy offers to eligible premium instructors in select countries, pays straight into your bank account without a wallet in between.

How to set up Udemy payout methods in India step by step

Udemy will not release money until both your tax form and your payout method are in place, so finish every step before your first payout date.

  1. Log in and open your settings - Use your Udemy instructor login and open Payout settings from your profile menu. Udemy's Tipalti setup guide calls the same settings Payout & Tax Settings.
  2. Submit your tax form - Udemy has required a valid tax form for every payout since 1 January 2024. For a Udemy instructor based in India, that form is Form W-8BEN, which, with a treaty claim, cuts the US tax Udemy withholds.
  3. Choose your payout method - Pick PayPal, Payoneer or, if your account shows it, Tipalti. For PayPal and Payoneer, approval can take up to three days before the method shows as Active. Direct Deposit appears on Udemy's help pages too, but it is open to US instructors only.
  4. Link an account in your own name - Keep your name identical across Udemy, your payout account and your bank. Udemy's Tipalti FAQ states that a Tipalti payout must go to a bank account in your name.
  5. Re-check your tax details after any switch - Udemy notes that moving to Tipalti can ask you to verify your tax information again.

If you are torn between the two wallet options, our comparison of PayPal vs Payoneer covers how the two differ beyond Udemy.

PayPal payouts and the PAN check Indian accounts need

Udemy's PayPal setup does not ask for a Business account. You log in with your PayPal account, or create one, and link it to your Udemy profile.

What PayPal India does need from an Indian instructor is a PAN (Permanent Account Number), checked as part of its account verification, and the name on your PAN must match your PayPal account.

Verify it before your first Udemy payout lands. PayPal then converts your dollars to rupees on withdrawal, and that conversion adds its own markup on top of the receiving fee.

Payoneer payouts and how the money reaches your bank

Payoneer receives your Udemy earnings in US dollars. Payoneer says the receiving fee for marketplace payments is set by each marketplace, while converting and withdrawing to an Indian bank in rupees costs between 1% and 4%, depending on the transfer.

One cost to watch is Payoneer's annual account fee. Payoneer India's pricing page, read on 25 September 2026, sets it at USD 29.95 a year if you receive less than USD 6,000 in any 12 consecutive months.

A quiet year on Udemy can add it to your withdrawal costs.

Local Bank Transfer through Tipalti and how it differs from PayPal

Tipalti is the payout processor Udemy offers to eligible premium instructors in select countries, and the methods it shows you depend on your region. You get two options at setup:

  • Direct Deposit/ACH (the local bank transfer) - This is Tipalti's option, separate from Udemy's US-only Direct Deposit. For India, it pays your bank in rupees, usually two to three business days after release.
  • Wire Transfer - This pays you in the currency you pick from the Payment Currency dropdown, including US dollars.

The main difference from PayPal is that no wallet sits between Udemy and your bank. Udemy says Tipalti carries lower foreign exchange fees for instructors paid outside US dollars, and Tipalti shows your exact fees during signup.

Those fees differ by country and currency.

Udemy revenue share for instructors on each type of sale

As a course creator, your share of each sale depends on how the student found your course. Udemy's Instructor Revenue Share policy sets a different split for each type of sale.

Type of saleYour shareWhat decides it
Organic marketplace sale37%A student finds and buys your course on Udemy with no coupon or referral link from you
Your coupon or referral link97%A student buys through a coupon code or referral link you shared
Subscription (Udemy Business, Personal Plan and Starter Plan)15% of the subscription revenue poolYour slice of the pool follows the time students spend on your courses, counting video and interactive tools such as quizzes; this rate took effect in January 2026

Figures checked 25 September 2026 against support.udemy.com and teach.udemy.com.

Subscription earnings behave differently from marketplace sales. No single purchase or course price sits behind them, because Udemy pays you a portion of a shared pool each month.

Your Udemy revenue share from subscriptions moves with the time subscribers spend on your courses.

How much you receive in rupees from one Udemy course sale

A sale passes through up to five cuts before it reaches your bank: taxes and store fees, Udemy's share, US withholding on US-student sales, your payout method's fee and the conversion to rupees.

Udemy calculates your share on the net amount, so a purchase through Apple or Google loses a 30% store fee first.

This example assumes a USD 19.99 net amount (illustrative), a US-based student, a W-8BEN with a treaty claim (so US withholding is 15%) and an illustrative rate of ₹96 per USD.

PayPal charges on the monthly payout, not each sale, so the last row applies its percentage to this sale's part of that payout, leaving out the fixed USD 0.30.

StepOrganic sale (37%)Coupon or referral sale (97%)Subscription pool (15%)
Net amount (illustrative)USD 19.99USD 19.99No single sale; paid from a pool
Your shareUSD 7.40USD 19.39Set by time spent on your courses each month

After PayPal's all-in cost of about 8% (USD 0.30 fixed fee excluded)₹555₹1,455The same percentage comes off the payout

Two changes move these numbers the most. If your W-8BEN has no treaty claim, US withholding doubles to 30% and your organic share falls to USD 5.18 before fees.

A student outside the US means no US withholding, so the full USD 7.40 or USD 19.39 goes to your payout method.

No Indian withholding comes off these figures today: Udemy's India Instructor Withholding Tax FAQ says Udemy currently pays that tax itself but plans to start deducting it.

PayPal fees in India taken out of a Udemy payout

PayPal India's merchant fee page lists two charges that stack on the same payout, and GST adds a third:

  • Receiving fee - 4.40% plus a fixed USD 0.30 on each international commercial payment you receive.
  • Currency conversion - 3.0% above PayPal's base exchange rate when your dollar balance is converted to rupees. The standard withdrawal to your linked bank has no fee of its own.
  • GST on the fee - 18% GST on the 4.40% receiving fee, which adds about 0.8% of the payout.

Because the conversion applies to what is left after the fee, the PayPal fee in India comes to about 8% of the payout, plus USD 0.30 per payment.

If you have seen other instructors quote about 5%, that figure probably leaves out the conversion markup, which is built into the exchange rate PayPal gives you. Our breakdown of PayPal transaction fees covers the fee schedule beyond Udemy payouts.

Net foreign exchange you keep with each payout method

Net foreign exchange is the rupee amount left after every fee and markup on the conversion. Take the organic sale worth ₹604 after withholding, and here is how each method compares:

  • Via PayPal - About ₹555 reaches you after PayPal's receiving fee, GST and conversion markup.
  • Via Payoneer - About ₹579 to ₹598 reaches you after the 1% to 4% withdrawal cost, before any annual account fee in a quiet year. See the current Payoneer charges for the full schedule.
  • Via Tipalti - The rupee amount depends on the fee Tipalti shows you during signup.

If your yearly Udemy balance is small, PayPal's percentage and Payoneer's annual account fee both weigh on you hardest.

If you earn steadily, compare the Tipalti fee shown in your own signup screen against these PayPal and Payoneer figures before you switch.

When Udemy pays instructors in India each month

Every Udemy instructor payment, India included, follows the same monthly calendar.

Udemy sends payouts during the first 10 business days of each month, and each payout moves through four statuses in your payout report: Initial, Processing, Ready to Pay and Success.

There is a gap between a sale and the payout that includes it, because Udemy processes the month and holds the refund window first.

Track each payout's status in your payout report to see which month a sale will be paid.

Udemy sets a minimum balance of USD 25 before it sends a payout. If your balance never reaches that amount during the year, Udemy still pays it out in December.

Once a payout leaves Udemy, the time to your bank depends on the method:

  • Via Tipalti - Direct Deposit/ACH to an Indian bank usually takes two to three business days.
  • Via Payoneer - Payoneer says most withdrawals arrive the same day or within two business days.
  • Via PayPal - The time depends on your receiving Indian bank.

Udemy withholding tax and income tax for Indian instructors

Three kinds of tax can touch your Udemy money, and each works on a different part of the payout:

  • US withholding - Udemy deducts it from your share of sales to students in the US, at the rate your W-8BEN sets.
  • Indian withholding - Udemy's India Instructor Withholding Tax FAQ says Indian law requires it to withhold tax on payouts to instructors resident in India. For now Udemy pays this tax itself, and it plans to start deducting it from payouts once its system is ready.
  • Indian income tax - You report the income yourself when you file your return in India.

The Indian tax Udemy pays for you shows in your Form 26AS, so check that the PAN on your Udemy account is correct.

Tax rules change, so treat this as a starting point and check your own position with a CA.

Your CA can also help with FIRA and GST. A FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) records foreign money arriving in India, and your bank or CA can confirm how one attaches to money routed through PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti.

Whether your Udemy income counts as an export of services under GST, and so is zero-rated, depends on who the recipient is and where the place of supply falls.

The conditions for GST on export of services sit in our explainer on export of services under GST.

How Form W-8BEN brings US withholding from 30% to 15%

For an Indian instructor, Udemy treats earnings from US students as copyright royalty income. If your W-8BEN makes no treaty claim, Udemy withholds 30% of your share from those US sales.

Claiming Article 12 of the India-US Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) on the form brings that down to 15%, the treaty's cap on royalties. Sales to students outside the US carry no US withholding at all.

Tax forms expire, and without a valid form Udemy sends no payout at all, so resubmit as soon as Udemy asks.

How Indian income tax treats your Udemy course earnings

As a course creator earning regularly from Udemy, you will usually report the income under Income from Business or Profession.

How your CA classifies it can depend on how you work, so treat this as a common approach, not a ruling. The broader rules on tax on foreign income apply as well.

You can generally claim credit in India for the US tax Udemy withheld, so the same income is not taxed twice in full.

You claim it on Form 67 for income up to the 2025-26 financial year, while income earned from 1 April 2026 moves to Form 44 under Rule 76 of the Income-tax Rules 2026.

How we help Udemy instructors get paid by overseas students directly

Udemy pays you through PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti, and we are not one of those payout options.

We help with the income you earn outside Udemy: live cohorts, one-to-one coaching, workshops or corporate training that you sell and invoice directly to students and companies abroad.

Whether you teach as an individual or run a training business, that money can come into an Xflow receiving account.

  • Local account details in four currencies - Clients in the US, the eurozone, the UK and Canada pay you by local transfer in USD, EUR, GBP or CAD, the way they would pay a supplier at home. Clients in places such as Australia, Singapore or the UAE pay by SWIFT, and we receive more than 25 currencies in total.
  • Rupees at the live mid-market rate - We convert your money and settle it to your Indian bank the next business day.
  • Paperwork included - Each credit comes with a free eFIRA (electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice), and your bank still issues the FIRC (Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate) if you need one. Your CA gets a record for every payment you invoiced.
  • Your money stays ring-fenced - The account is a routing account issued by our banking partner, and funds can move only to your registered Indian bank account.

Keep your Udemy payouts on the PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti setup above, and use Xflow for the invoices you raise yourself.

Signing up takes about 10 minutes online, with same-day activation, and the fee depends on your plan, listed on our pricing page. Xflow Payments India Pvt.

Ltd. holds final Payment Aggregator - Cross Border (PA-CB) authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as of February 2026. Final authorisation is the fully approved stage, beyond in-principle approval.

Frequently asked questions

Getting paid from Udemy takes three steps: submit your tax form (Form W-8BEN), choose PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti in your payout settings, and link an account in your name.

Udemy then pays you in the first 10 business days of the month once your balance reaches USD 25.

Udemy payout methods for Indian instructors are PayPal, Payoneer and Tipalti, which Udemy offers to eligible premium instructors in select countries. Direct Deposit is listed on Udemy's help pages but is available only to instructors in the US.

A "Resubmit required" status means Udemy cannot accept your current tax form, usually because it expired, was rejected or is incomplete.

Submit a fresh W-8BEN. Udemy reviews forms in two to three business days; contact Udemy Support if yours takes longer.

A PayPal Business account is not something Udemy's setup asks for. You log in with your PayPal account, or create one, and link it to your Udemy profile. Before you withdraw, make sure PayPal India has verified your PAN.

Direct payment to an Indian bank works through Tipalti's Direct Deposit/ACH, which pays in rupees, usually two to three business days after release.

It is open only to eligible premium instructors, and Udemy's own Direct Deposit is for US instructors only.
