Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a UK IBAN to hand, run through these checks before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the UK bank. Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is mandatory for most GBP transfers, so the name must match.
  • 02
For domestic GBP payments inside the UK, the recipient is much more likely to quote sort code plus account number than the IBAN. Both reference the same account.
  • 03
Decide the rail. Faster Payments handles 24/7 GBP transfers up to £1 million. CHAPS is the same-day RTGS for high-value or time-critical payments. BACS covers payroll and Direct Debit on a 3-day cycle.
  • 04
For inbound EUR, the UK is a non-EEA SEPA participant. SCT and SDD transactions require full address details for debtor and creditor.
  • 05
For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test value first.

IBAN Rules in United Kingdom

  • 01
IBAN is not mandatory for domestic UK payments. It is required for cross-border, SEPA, and SWIFT transactions. Domestic GBP transfers use sort code plus account number.
  • 02
The 22-character UK IBAN begins with GB, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code (derived from the BIC), a 6-digit sort code, and an 8-digit account number.
  • 03
The UK is a SEPA participant under European Payments Council approval as a non-EEA SEPA country since Brexit. SCT and SDD transactions to and from the UK now require full debtor and creditor address details. Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is mandatory across most GBP transfers as of 2024, so names must match the account exactly.
