Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a UAE IBAN to hand, complete these final checks before sending.
- 01Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the UAE bank. CBUAE rules require name and IBAN to match for STP.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for inbound cross-border wires.
- 03Decide the rail. For 24/7 retail payments inside the UAE, Aani settles via mobile, email, or QR alias up to AED 50,000 per transaction. For larger flows or corporate payroll, UAEFTS handles RTGS.
- 04Confirm the account currency. UAE banks routinely hold AED, USD, EUR, GBP, and INR. AED is pegged to USD at around 3.6725.
- 05For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test transfer first.

IBAN Rules in United Arab Emirates
- 01IBAN is mandatory in the UAE for every domestic and cross-border transaction through UAEFTS, in force since November 2011 by Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) mandate.
- 02The 23-character UAE IBAN begins with AE, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, and a 16-digit account number (zero-padded if shorter).
- 03IBAN is the sole standard for electronic interbank payments in the UAE, with legacy account numbers embedded inside the 16-digit BBAN. The same UAE IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires, UAEFTS RTGS settlement, Aani instant retail payments, and ICCS retail clearing. CBUAE's National Payment Systems Strategy is progressively consolidating retail rails under Al Etihad Payments.
