Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Ukrainian IBAN to hand, complete these checks before sending.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Ukrainian bank.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Ukraine is not yet in SEPA, so inbound EUR or USD wires route through correspondent banking.
- 03For UAH inside Ukraine, transfers settle through SEP and from August 2025 instant credit transfers are mandatory for all PSPs, so 24/7 settlement is widely available.
- 04Be aware of war-related sanctions and currency-control rules that affect inbound and outbound flows. Confirm specific corridors with the sending bank.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Ukrainian counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Ukraine
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Ukraine for every UAH and FX transfer, in force since 1 November 2019 under National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) directives.
- 02The 29-character Ukrainian IBAN begins with UA, two check digits, a 6-digit NBU bank code (MFO), and a 19-digit account number, zero-padded if shorter.
- 03The legacy MFO plus account pair is now embedded inside the IBAN. The same Ukrainian IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires, domestic UAH transfers through SEP, and instant payments. Ukraine signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Payments Council and has a formal SEPA application targeted for the second half of 2025, with accession projected for 2027 to 2028. As of mid-2026, Ukraine is not yet a SEPA participant.
