Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Swiss IBAN to hand, run through these final checks.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Swiss bank.
- 02For SEPA EUR transfers (Switzerland is a SEPA member despite being outside the EU), the IBAN is enough. For inbound non-SEPA wires (typically CHF or non-EUR FX), pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Choose the rail. For CHF inside Switzerland, SIC handles RTGS and SIC5 handles 24/7 instant payments since August 2024.
- 04For QR-bill invoices, the IBAN (or QR-IBAN for invoice references) appears on the bill directly.
- 05Confirm the account currency. Swiss banks routinely support CHF, EUR, USD, and GBP.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Switzerland
Exact beneficiary name
Must match bank records exactly to avoid rejection or delays
Correct SWIFT/BIC code
Ensures the payment routes to the right bank.
Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Switzerland
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Switzerland for every CHF and FX payment via Swiss banks. The IBAN replaced legacy bank account number formats domestically.
- 02The 21-character Swiss IBAN begins with CH, two check digits, a 5-digit institution identifier (IID), and a 12-character account number.
- 03Switzerland is a SEPA member (since 2015) despite sitting outside the EU and EEA, so Swiss banks can send and receive SEPA Credit Transfers in EUR. The QR-bill, which replaced the old paper inpayment slip in 2022, uses the IBAN or QR-IBAN as the primary reference. The same Swiss IBAN structure is shared with Liechtenstein. The same IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires, SIC settlement for CHF, and SCT for EUR cross-border.
Switzerland Payment Schemes
Switzerland operates SIC for CHF and joined SEPA in 2015 for EUR, with TWINT dominating mobile.
- 01SIC (Swiss Interbank Clearing), SIX Interbank Clearing on behalf of Swiss National Bank (SNB), RTGS for CHF interbank settlement.
- 02SIC5 / Swiss Instant Payments, SIX and SNB, 24/7 instant CHF settlement, sub-10-second processing, launched August 2024.
- 03euroSIC, SIX Interbank Clearing, EUR settlement system for Swiss-based participants, links to SEPA.
- 04TWINT, TWINT AG (Swiss bank consortium with PostFinance), mobile P2P, in-store, online, and QR payments, settled via SIC.
- 05SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) and SCT Inst, for EUR cross-border.
- 06SWIFT, for global cross-border settlement.
