Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Swedish IBAN to hand, complete these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Swedish bank.
- 02For cross-border SEPA EUR transfers, the IBAN is enough. For inbound non-SEPA payments or SEK from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Note that Swedes commonly quote a 4-digit clearing number plus account number for domestic SEK transfers, or a Bankgiro or Plusgiro number for business invoicing. Both clearing-plus-account and IBAN reference the same bank account.
- 04For consumer P2P, Swish dominates and settles via RIX-INST.
- 05Confirm the account currency. Swedish banks support SEK, EUR, USD, and GBP.

IBAN Rules in Sweden
- 01IBAN use in Sweden is conditional. It is required for cross-border transfers, while domestic SEK transfers commonly use the local clearing number plus account number format, or Bankgiro and Plusgiro numbers for business payments.
- 02The 24-character Swedish IBAN begins with SE, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 6-digit BBAN check, and an 11-digit account number.
- 03Sweden is in the EU and a full SEPA member, but the krona (SEK) sits outside the eurozone and does not clear via SEPA. The same Swedish IBAN handles SEPA EUR transfers and inbound SWIFT wires, but domestic SEK payments more commonly use clearing number plus account number, or a Bankgiro identifier.
