IBAN Rules in Spain

IBAN is mandatory in Spain for every domestic and cross-border credit transfer, in force since SEPA migration.

The 24-character Spanish IBAN begins with ES, two check digits, a 4-digit bank code, a 4-digit branch code, two national check digits, and a 10-digit account number. The last 20 digits are the legacy CCC (Codigo Cuenta Cliente).

The legacy CCC is embedded inside the IBAN and is no longer used standalone. Spain is in the eurozone and a full SEPA member. The same Spanish IBAN works for every domestic Spanish payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires.
