Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Slovak IBAN in hand, run through these final checks.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Slovak bank. Verification of Payee applies across the eurozone.
- 02SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (sub-10 seconds, 24/7).
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Most Slovak banks also support multi-currency sub-accounts.
- 05For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test transfer before any large transfer.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Slovakia
Exact beneficiary name
Must match bank records exactly to avoid rejection or delays
Correct SWIFT/BIC code
Ensures the payment routes to the right bank.
Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Slovakia
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Slovakia for every domestic and cross-border credit transfer, governed by NBS Decree No. 8/2009.
- 02The 24-character Slovak IBAN begins with SK, two check digits, a 4-digit bank code, a 6-digit account prefix (often zero-padded), and a 10-digit account number.
- 03The legacy prefix-base-bank-code format is conceptually embedded inside the IBAN BBAN but rarely used standalone today. Slovakia adopted the euro on 1 January 2009 and is a full SEPA member, so the same Slovak IBAN works for every domestic payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires.
Slovakia Payment Schemes
Slovakia operates within Eurosystem rails, with Narodna banka Slovenska as participant.
- 01SIPS (Slovak Interbank Payment System), Narodna banka Slovenska (NBS), domestic clearing system that interfaces with SEPA via converter.
- 02T2 / TARGET2-SK, Eurosystem with NBS as participant, RTGS for high-value euro.
- 03TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 04SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 05SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers.
- 06SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debits.
- 07Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
