Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Serbian IBAN to hand, run through these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Serbian bank.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Serbia is not yet a SEPA member, so inbound EUR wires route through correspondent banking.
- 03Decide the rail. For RSD inside Serbia, NBS IPS handles 24/7 instant transfers up to RSD 300,000 with median 1.2-second processing. Larger amounts go through NBS RTGS (mandatory for RSD 300,000 and above).
- 04Note that domestic RSD transfers commonly use the 18-digit local account format (3-13-2). Both formats reference the same account.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Serbian counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Serbia
- 01IBAN use in Serbia is conditional. It is required for cross-border transactions, while domestic dinar transactions traditionally use the 18-digit local account format (3-13-2). Use of IBAN domestically is increasing but the legacy format remains in widespread use.
- 02The 22-character Serbian IBAN begins with RS, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 13-digit account number, and two national check digits.
- 03Serbia is not yet a SEPA participant as of 2026, though SEPA accession is on its policy agenda. The same Serbian IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires and increasingly domestic interbank flows, while traditional 18-digit account numbers continue to coexist for in-country transfers.
Serbia Payment Schemes
Serbia operates one of the Balkans' earliest instant payment systems, NBS IPS, alongside RTGS and net clearing.
- 01NBS RTGS, National Bank of Serbia, RTGS for high-value RSD transfers, mandatory for transfers of RSD 300,000 and above.
- 02NBS Clearing, National Bank of Serbia, net deferred clearing for low-value RSD credit transfers below RSD 300,000.
- 03NBS IPS (Instant Payments System), National Bank of Serbia, 24/7 instant RSD transfers since 22 October 2018, the first instant system in the Balkans, cap RSD 300,000 per order, median 1.2-second processing.
- 04DinaCard, National Bank of Serbia, domestic card scheme clearing.
- 05NBS Interbank Clearing of FX Payments, FX settlement.
- 06SWIFT, for cross-border settlement via correspondent banks.
