Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Romanian IBAN to hand, run through these checks before sending.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Romanian bank.
- 02For cross-border SEPA EUR transfers, the IBAN is enough. For RON transfers, pair it with the BIC where the sending bank requires.
- 03Choose the rail. For RON inside Romania, Plati Instant handles 24/7 instant transfers. For EUR, SEPA Credit Transfer or SCT Inst applies.
- 04Confirm the account currency. Romanian banks commonly hold RON, EUR, and USD.
- 05Send a small test transfer first for first-time corporate beneficiaries.

IBAN Rules in Romania
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Romania for every domestic and cross-border RON and EUR transfer, enforced by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
- 02The 24-character Romanian IBAN begins with RO, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, and a 16-character account identifier.
- 03Romania is in the EU and SEPA but not in the eurozone, so the leu (RON) is the domestic currency and SEPA covers EUR transactions only. The same Romanian IBAN handles SEPA EUR transfers, domestic RON flows via ReGIS or SENT, and inbound SWIFT wires. There is no parallel local account format in widespread use.
Romania Payment Schemes
Romania's payment systems are operated by the National Bank of Romania and TRANSFOND, with RoPay layered on top of Plati Instant for retail.
- 01ReGIS, National Bank of Romania (BNR), RTGS for high-value RON settlement.
- 02SENT (Sistemul Electronic de Transfer National), TRANSFOND, ACH for retail RON credit transfers and direct debits.
- 03Plati Instant, TRANSFOND, 24/7 instant RON credit transfers, live since April 2019.
- 04RoPay, TRANSFOND under BNR-approved scheme rules from July 2024, QR and phone-number mobile payment overlay on Plati Instant.
- 05T2 / TARGET2-RO, Eurosystem, RTGS for EUR settlement.
- 06SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), for EUR cross-border.
