Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Qatari IBAN to hand, run through these steps before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the Qatari bank. QCB rules require name and IBAN to match for STP.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for inbound cross-border wires.
  • 03
Decide the rail. For 24/7 domestic retail in QAR, Fawran handles instant payments via mobile-number aliases. QA-RTGS handles high-value flows and now runs on ISO 20022 since December 2024.
  • 04
Confirm the account currency. Qatari banks commonly hold QAR, USD, and EUR.
  • 05
For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test transfer first.

IBAN Rules in Qatar

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Qatar for every domestic and cross-border payment, enforced by Qatar Central Bank to enable Straight-Through Processing.
  • 02
The 29-character Qatari IBAN begins with QA, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, and a 21-character account identifier.
  • 03
IBAN is the sole account standard, and legacy account numbers are encoded within the 21-character BBAN. The same Qatari IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires, RTGS settlement, ACH clearing through QATCH, and the newer 24/7 Fawran instant payments. QA-RTGS migrated to ISO 20022 in December 2024, aligning Qatar with global ISO 20022 cross-border standards.
