Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Polish IBAN verified, run through these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Polish bank.
- 02For cross-border SEPA EUR transfers, the IBAN is enough. For inbound non-SEPA payments or PLN transfers from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Choose the rail. For PLN inside Poland, Express Elixir handles 24/7 instant payments up to PLN 100,000 (PLN 250,000 to government). For EUR, Euro Elixir routes SEPA flows.
- 04Note that Poles often quote the 26-digit NRB (national bank account number) for domestic transfers rather than the full IBAN. Both reference the same account.
- 05Confirm the account currency. Polish banks commonly hold PLN, EUR, USD, and GBP.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Poland
Exact beneficiary name
Must match bank records exactly to avoid rejection or delays
Correct SWIFT/BIC code
Ensures the payment routes to the right bank.
Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Poland
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Poland for cross-border transfers. The NRB (Numer Rachunku Bankowego, the 26-digit domestic form) is required for domestic transfers and is functionally the same digits as the IBAN without "PL" and the two check digits.
- 02The 28-character Polish IBAN begins with PL, two check digits, an 8-digit bank or branch code, and a 16-digit account number.
- 03Poland is in the EU and SEPA but not in the eurozone, so the zloty (PLN) is the domestic currency and SEPA covers EUR transactions only. The same Polish IBAN handles SEPA EUR transfers, domestic PLN flows via Elixir or Express Elixir, and inbound SWIFT wires. NRB and IBAN coexist in Polish banking documents.
