Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Pakistani IBAN to hand, complete these steps before sending.
- 01Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name and CNIC or NTN (tax ID) with the Pakistani bank.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for any inbound cross-border payment.
- 03Decide the rail. For 24/7 retail payments inside Pakistan, Raast settles via mobile number or Raast ID and is free. For larger interbank flows, PRISM+ (RTGS) handles high-value settlement.
- 04Confirm the account currency. Pakistani banks commonly hold PKR, USD, and AED.
- 05For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test transfer first and reconcile against bank confirmation.

IBAN Rules in Pakistan
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Pakistan for every domestic and cross-border transaction, in force since the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) IBAN guidelines took effect in 2012.
- 02The 24-character Pakistani IBAN begins with PK, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, and a 16-character account identifier.
- 03Legacy account numbers have been migrated into the 16-digit BBAN within the IBAN. Pakistan is outside SEPA, so SEPA does not apply. Raast IDs (mobile-number aliases) are increasingly used as a consumer identifier alongside IBAN but the underlying settlement still resolves to the IBAN. The same Pakistani IBAN handles inbound SWIFT remittances, PRISM+ RTGS settlement, and 1LINK IBFT retail interbank transfers.
Pakistan Payment Schemes
Pakistan's payment infrastructure is operated by the State Bank of Pakistan and the bank consortium 1LINK.
- 01PRISM / PRISM+ (Pakistan Real-time Interbank Settlement Mechanism), State Bank of Pakistan, RTGS for large-value and urgent interbank settlement, PRISM+ ISO 20022 upgrade live August 2025.
- 02Raast, State Bank of Pakistan with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation support, domestic instant retail payments 24/7 via Raast IDs (mobile aliases).
- 031LINK, 1LINK (Guarantee) Ltd consortium under SBP oversight, shared payment switch for ATM, IBFT, and bill payments.
- 04PayPak, 1LINK, domestic card scheme.
- 05SWIFT, for cross-border settlement.
