Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Norwegian IBAN to hand, complete these checks before sending. Note that Norway uses one of the shortest IBANs (15 characters).
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Norwegian bank.
- 02For cross-border SEPA payments in EUR, the IBAN is enough. For non-SEPA inbound wires, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Domestic NOK transfers inside Norway commonly use the 11-digit BBAN (kontonummer) rather than the IBAN, so a Norwegian payee may quote the BBAN.
- 04For consumer P2P, Vipps MobilePay is dominant and settles via underlying bank rails.
- 05Confirm the account currency. Norwegian banks support NOK, EUR, USD, and GBP for international clients.

IBAN Rules in Norway
- 01IBAN use in Norway is conditional. It is required for cross-border SEPA transfers but not for domestic NOK payments, which use the 11-digit BBAN (kontonummer) instead.
- 02The 15-character Norwegian IBAN, the shortest globally, begins with NO, two check digits, a 4-digit bank code, a 6-digit account number, and a 1-digit national check.
- 03Norway sits in the EEA and is a SEPA member for EUR transactions, but NOK is the domestic currency and does not clear via SEPA. The same IBAN handles inbound EUR SEPA wires and inbound SWIFT wires, while domestic NOK transfers are typically initiated using the BBAN. Confirm with your Norwegian counterparty which format they want.
Norway Payment Schemes
Norway runs a small but modern payments stack, with Vipps MobilePay dominating retail.
- 01NBO (Norges Bank's settlement system), Norges Bank, RTGS for interbank NOK settlement.
- 02NICS (Norwegian Interbank Clearing System), Bits AS (operated by Mastercard Payment Services), domestic clearing for NOK, including NICS Net and NICS Real.
- 03Straks 2.0 / Straksbetaling, within NICS, domestic instant payments scheme for NOK A2A transfers.
- 04Vipps (now Vipps MobilePay after 2022 merger), private mobile P2P and merchant payments, dominant in Norway and now covering Denmark and Finland.
- 05SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) and SCT Inst, for EUR cross-border.
- 06BankAxept, Norwegian domestic debit card scheme.
