Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Dutch IBAN to hand, run through these final checks.

  • 01
Confirm the registered beneficiary name. Verification of Payee applies across the eurozone.
  • 02
SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair it with the BIC.
  • 03
Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. The Netherlands is the eurozone's largest SCT Inst processor via equensWorldline.
  • 04
For consumer-facing payments, iDEAL is the dominant Dutch online payment rail, transitioning to Wero by 2028.
  • 05
Under SEPA regulation, Dutch businesses cannot refuse a valid EU/EEA EUR IBAN. So-called IBAN discrimination is illegal.

IBAN Rules in Netherlands

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in the Netherlands for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer.
  • 02
The 18-character Dutch IBAN begins with NL, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code (derived from the BIC), and a 10-digit account number.
  • 03
Legacy 9- or 10-digit Dutch account numbers were retired at SEPA migration in 2014 and are no longer valid as standalone identifiers. The Netherlands is in the eurozone and a full SEPA member, and Dutch businesses are legally required to accept any EU or EEA EUR IBAN under SEPA Regulation 260/2012. The same IBAN works for every Dutch domestic payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires.
