Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Maltese IBAN in hand, run through these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Maltese bank.
- 02The Maltese IBAN is 31 characters, one of the longest globally. Accidentally truncating it is a common cause of failed transfers, so copy and paste rather than re-typing.
- 03SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair it with the BIC.
- 04Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer via TIPS or RT1.
- 05Confirm the account holds EUR. Maltese banks often offer multi-currency accounts for international clients.

IBAN Rules in Malta
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Malta for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer.
- 02At 31 characters, the Maltese IBAN is one of the longest in the world. It begins with MT, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, a 5-digit sort or branch code, and an 18-character account identifier.
- 03There is no parallel legacy domestic account format. Malta is in the eurozone since 2008 and a full SEPA member. The same IBAN works for every domestic Maltese payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires. There is no standalone Maltese instant rail, so SCT Inst via TIPS or RT1 handles instant euro payments.
Malta Payment Schemes
Malta operates within Eurosystem infrastructure under Central Bank of Malta oversight.
- 01T2, Eurosystem with Central Bank of Malta as participant, RTGS for high-value euro.
- 02TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 03SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 04SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers via TIPS or RT1.
- 05SEPA Direct Debit (SDD CORE and SDD B2B), recurring euro direct debits.
- 06Domestic cheque clearing, overseen by Central Bank of Malta.
- 07Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
