Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Luxembourg IBAN to hand, run through these final checks.

  • 01
Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Luxembourg bank. Verification of Payee applies across the eurozone.
  • 02
SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
  • 03
Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (24/7, sub-10 seconds).
  • 04
Confirm the account currency. Luxembourg banks frequently hold multi-currency sub-accounts for international clients under the same IBAN.
  • 05
For first-time beneficiaries, especially for fund subscriptions or holding-company payments, send a small test value first.

IBAN Rules in Luxembourg

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Luxembourg for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer.
  • 02
The 20-character Luxembourg IBAN begins with LU, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code (administered jointly by ABBL and BCL or CSSF), and a 13-character account identifier issued by the bank.
  • 03
There is no parallel legacy domestic account format. Luxembourg is a founding eurozone country and full SEPA member. The same IBAN works for every domestic Luxembourg payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires. Because Luxembourg's banking sector is heavily oriented toward international fund administration and private banking, most retail volume already routes via SEPA and EBA Clearing rather than purely domestic rails.

Luxembourg Payment Schemes

Luxembourg relies on pan-European infrastructure for most of its payments, with BCL as Eurosystem participant.

  • 01
T2, Eurosystem with Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL) as participant, RTGS for high-value euro.
  • 02
TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
  • 03
SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), accessed via TARGET services and EBA Clearing's STEP2 and RT1.
  • 04
SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debits.
  • 05
    Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
  • 06
LIPS-Gross, BCL's former domestic RTGS, replaced by TARGET2 in 2007.
