Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Lithuanian IBAN verified, run through these checks before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the registered beneficiary name. Verification of Payee applies across the eurozone.
  • 02
SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
  • 03
Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. Lithuania is TIPS-reachable and connects to RT1 through CENTROlink.
  • 04
Confirm whether the counterparty is a bank or an EMI / payment institution, since Lithuania is the EU's largest fintech hub for non-bank PSPs with direct SEPA access.
  • 05
Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Lithuanian counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Lithuania

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Lithuania for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer.
  • 02
The 20-character Lithuanian IBAN begins with LT, two check digits, a 5-digit bank code (assigned by Bank of Lithuania), and an 11-digit account number.
  • 03
There is no parallel legacy domestic format. Lithuania is in the eurozone, a full SEPA member, and uniquely opens its national clearing infrastructure CENTROlink to non-bank PSPs, including EMIs and payment institutions. This has made Lithuania the preferred SEPA-access jurisdiction for EU fintechs. The same IBAN works for every domestic Lithuanian payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires.
