Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Latvian IBAN in hand, run through these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name. Verification of Payee applies across the eurozone, Latvia included.
- 02SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. Latvia is a TIPS-reachable jurisdiction.
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Latvian banks support multi-currency accounts for international clients.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Latvian counterparty. EKS access is open to non-bank PSPs, so a Latvian EMI may be your counterparty rather than a traditional bank.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Latvia

Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Latvia
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Latvia for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer. As a eurozone member since 2014, Latvia uses IBAN as the sole account identifier.
- 02The 21-character Latvian IBAN begins with LV, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code (first four characters of the bank's BIC), and a 13-character account identifier.
- 03There is no parallel legacy domestic account format. The same IBAN works for every domestic Latvian payment, for any SEPA destination, and for inbound SWIFT wires. Latvijas Banka opened EKS, the national clearing system, to non-bank PSPs, which has made Latvia a hub for European fintechs needing direct SEPA access.
Latvia Payment Schemes
Latvia's payment systems are operated by Latvijas Banka and integrated tightly into Eurosystem infrastructure.
- 01EKS (Electronic Clearing System), Latvijas Banka, retail payment system covering SCT, SDD, and SCT Inst, 24/7/365.
- 02T2, Eurosystem with Latvijas Banka as participant, RTGS for high-value euro.
- 03TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 04SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 05SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers in under 10 seconds.
- 06SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debits.
