Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Kuwaiti IBAN verified, take these steps before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the Kuwaiti bank. CBK rules require name and IBAN to align.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for inbound cross-border wires.
  • 03
Decide the rail. RTGS via KASSIP handles high-value flows. For 24/7 account-to-account retail, Wamd (launched 2024) is the instant rail. For card payments inside Kuwait, KNET dominates.
  • 04
KWD is the world's highest-value currency unit, so even small KWD values can represent large USD equivalents. Confirm rates with the sender bank.
  • 05
For first-time corporate transfers, send a small test value first.

IBAN Rules in Kuwait

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Kuwait for every domestic and cross-border bank transfer, in force since the Central Bank of Kuwait mandated it on 1 January 2011.
  • 02
The 30-character Kuwaiti IBAN begins with KW, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code (the SWIFT/BIC prefix), and a 22-character account identifier.
  • 03
Legacy local account numbers exist inside banks but IBAN is the required format for all interbank transfers. KWD is pegged within a basket but is broadly stable against USD. The same IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires, RTGS settlement through KASSIP, and the newer account-based Wamd instant transfers across all Kuwaiti banks.
