Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Kosovar IBAN in hand, run through these steps before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the Kosovar bank.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Kosovo uses the euro but is not yet a SEPA member, so EUR transfers route via correspondent banking.
  • 03
Be aware that some international banks reject XK IBANs because XK is not an officially assigned ISO 3166 country code. Confirm with the sending bank before initiating a large transfer.
  • 04
For domestic Kosovo payments, the Central Bank of Kosovo's Interbank Payment System handles settlement directly.
  • 05
Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Kosovar counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Kosovo

  • 01
IBAN is the standard account format used by every Kosovar bank for domestic and cross-border transfers under Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) rules.
  • 02
The 20-character Kosovar IBAN begins with XK, two check digits, a 2-digit bank code, a 2-digit branch code, a 10-digit account number, and two national check digits.
  • 03
Kosovo unilaterally adopted the euro in 2002 but sits outside both the eurozone and SEPA as of mid-2026. CBK has completed regulatory preparation and submitted a pre-application for SEPA membership, with three laws pending Constitutional Court review. Until SEPA accession completes, EUR transfers in and out of Kosovo route through correspondent banking, which adds cost and time relative to true SEPA flows.

Kosovo Payment Schemes

Kosovo's payment system is operated by the Central Bank of Kosovo, with no SEPA reach yet.

  • 01
Interbank Payment System (IPS), Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo, RTGS plus retail clearing for euro payments domestically.
  • 02
National Payment Council, reactivated by CBK in January 2024, coordinates payment reforms.
  • 03
Visa and Mastercard card schemes, dominant for retail card payments.
  • 04
SWIFT, for cross-border settlement via correspondent banking.
  • 05
Pending: SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, subject to SEPA accession during 2026.
