Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Kazakhstani IBAN to hand, take these steps before transferring.
- 01Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name and BIN (12-digit business or individual ID) with the bank.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for any inbound cross-border payment.
- 03For KZT settlement, you will need to supply KOD (2 digits), KBE (2 digits), and KNP (3-digit purpose code) alongside the IBAN. These are not part of the IBAN itself but are mandatory for the wire instruction.
- 04Confirm the account currency. Kazakh banks commonly hold KZT, USD, EUR, and RUB.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Kazakh counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Kazakhstan
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Kazakhstan for every domestic and cross-border transfer, in force since 1 June 2010 under National Bank of Kazakhstan rules.
- 02The 20-character Kazakh IBAN begins with KZ, two check digits, a 3-digit bank identifier, and a 13-character account number.
- 03There is no parallel legacy retail rail. IBAN is the standard account identifier. For KZT payments, however, every cash instruction additionally requires BIN, KOD, KBE, and KNP codes, which are separate from the IBAN but mandatory for STP. National Bank of Kazakhstan supervises both rails through KISC, its payments subsidiary. The same IBAN handles inbound SWIFT wires and domestic interbank settlement.
Kazakhstan Payment Schemes
Kazakhstan's payments are centralised through the National Bank of Kazakhstan and its Kazakhstan Interbank Settlement Centre.
- 01ISMT (Interbank System of Money Transfer), Kazakhstan Interbank Settlement Centre (KISC) under NBK, RTGS for large-value and time-critical payments.
- 02SRP / Interbank Clearing System, KISC under NBK, deferred net settlement for low-value retail payments.
- 03National Payment Corporation (NPC), NBK subsidiary, operates payment infrastructure and instant payments development.
- 04Digital Tenge, NBK, CBDC in pilot and expansion phase.
- 05Visa, Mastercard, and the domestic Kaspi.kz payments and super-app ecosystem.
