Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With an Italian IBAN to hand, complete these checks before sending.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Italian bank. EU Verification of Payee applies from October 2025, with extension to PIs and EMIs in 2027.
- 02SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound payments from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer (Bonifico SEPA) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (Bonifico Istantaneo, sub-10 seconds, 24/7, mandatory from October 2025).
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Italian banks commonly support multi-currency sub-accounts under the same IBAN.
- 05For first-time corporate beneficiaries, send a small test value before any large transfer.

IBAN Rules in Italy
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Italy for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer.
- 02The 27-character Italian IBAN begins with IT, two check digits, a 1-letter CIN check character, a 5-digit ABI bank code, a 5-digit CAB branch code, and a 12-character account number.
- 03Legacy Coordinate Bancarie (ABI plus CAB plus account plus CIN) is now embedded inside the IBAN, so it is not used standalone. Italy is in the eurozone, a full SEPA member, and Banca d'Italia is one of three Eurosystem central banks operating T2. Italy is also the technical operator of TIPS for the Eurosystem. The same IBAN works for domestic Italian payments, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires.
Italy Payment Schemes
Italy is a Eurosystem heavyweight, with Banca d'Italia operating T2 and TIPS on behalf of the Eurosystem.
- 01T2, Eurosystem (Banca d'Italia co-operator), RTGS for high-value euro.
- 02BI-Comp, Banca d'Italia, domestic retail clearing for SEPA and domestic instructions.
- 03TIPS, Eurosystem (Banca d'Italia technical operator), pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 04SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 05SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst / Bonifico Istantaneo), 24/7 EUR transfers, mandatory from October 2025.
- 06SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debits.
- 07Bancomat and PagoBancomat, Italian domestic card and debit schemes.
