Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With an Israeli IBAN verified, complete these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the Israeli bank.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for inbound wires. Israel is not in SEPA, so EUR or USD payments route through correspondent banks.
- 03For payments inside Israel, the recipient may quote the bank code, branch code, and account number directly rather than the IBAN. Both reference the same account.
- 04Confirm the account currency. Israeli banks commonly hold ILS, USD, and EUR.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Israeli counterparty, especially for ILS-denominated invoices.

IBAN Rules in Israel
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Israel for international transfers and is increasingly used for domestic flows. Bank of Israel has standardised IBAN, though many domestic transfers still quote bank, branch, and account number directly.
- 02The 23-character Israeli IBAN begins with IL, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 3-digit branch code, and a 13-digit account number.
- 03Domestic Israeli transfers commonly use the bank-branch-account triple in addition to IBAN. There is no full 24/7 retail instant payment scheme equivalent to SEPA Instant or UAE Aani in production at the time of writing. Bank of Israel has a faster-payments roadmap, so verify status before scoping any time-sensitive flows.
Israel Payment Schemes
Israel's payment systems are operated by Bank of Israel and the Bank Clearing Center, with no pan-Israeli instant rail yet in production.
- 01Zahav, Bank of Israel, RTGS for high-value ILS interbank settlement, credit-only.
- 02Masav, Bank Clearing Center Ltd under Bank of Israel, ACH and bulk retail clearing for salaries, direct debits, and scheduled transfers.
- 03Paper-Based Clearing House, cheque clearing.
- 04TASE Clearing Houses, securities and derivatives.
- 05Shva / ITS, domestic card switch and processor.
- 06Visa, Mastercard, and American Express card schemes.
