Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With an Irish IBAN to hand, complete these checks before sending.
- 01Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Irish bank. EU Verification of Payee rules apply from October 2025.
- 02SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound payments from outside SEPA, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer (standard) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (sub-10 seconds, 24/7, mandatory from October 2025).
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Many Irish corporate accounts also hold GBP and USD under the same IBAN.
- 05For first-time beneficiaries, especially when paying contractors or suppliers, send a small test transfer first.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Ireland
Exact beneficiary name
Must match bank records exactly to avoid rejection or delays
Correct SWIFT/BIC code
Ensures the payment routes to the right bank.
Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Ireland
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Ireland for every SEPA transaction and for most domestic transfers.
- 02The 22-character Irish IBAN begins with IE, two check digits, a 4-letter bank identifier (first four characters of the BIC), a 6-digit National Sort Code (NSC), and an 8-digit account number.
- 03The legacy NSC plus account number is now embedded inside the IBAN and is rarely used standalone. Ireland has been in the eurozone since 1999 and is a full SEPA member. The same IBAN works for every domestic Irish payment, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires from outside the SEPA area. Old domestic rails like IRECC have been retired in favour of SEPA infrastructure.
Ireland Payment Schemes
Ireland fully retired its legacy domestic rails in favour of Eurosystem and SEPA infrastructure.
- 01T2, Eurosystem with Central Bank of Ireland as participant, RTGS for high-value euro.
- 02TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 03SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 04SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers, mandatory send and receive from October 2025.
- 05SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debits.
- 06Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
