Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Hungarian IBAN verified, complete these checks before transferring.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name with the Hungarian bank.
- 02For SEPA EUR transfers, the IBAN is enough. For inbound non-SEPA payments or HUF transfers from outside Hungary, pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC.
- 03Choose the rail. HUF transfers domestically route through AFR (Hungary's instant payment system) and settle in under 5 seconds 24/7 up to HUF 20 million. For EUR transfers, SEPA and SCT Inst apply.
- 04Confirm the account currency. Most Hungarian accounts hold HUF, but many businesses also hold EUR.
- 05Send a small test value for first-time corporate beneficiaries.

Correct SWIFT/BIC code

Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Hungary
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Hungary for SEPA payments and is increasingly used for domestic HUF transfers. The legacy 2x8 or 3x8 GIRO account format (for example 12345678-12345678) is mapped into the IBAN BBAN.
- 02The 28-character Hungarian IBAN begins with HU, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 4-digit branch code, a 1-digit check, a 15-digit account number, and a 1-digit national check.
- 03Hungary is in the EU and SEPA but not in the eurozone, so the forint (HUF) is the domestic currency. Domestic HUF instant transfers go through AFR. SEPA covers EUR transactions only. The same IBAN works for both EUR via SEPA and HUF via AFR, so it is the safest single identifier to share with a foreign counterparty.
Hungary Payment Schemes
Hungary runs one of Europe's most successful instant payment systems, AFR, alongside legacy retail and RTGS rails.
- 01AFR / HCT Inst (Azonnali Fizetesi Rendszer), GIRO Zrt under MNB mandate, instant HUF payments 24/7 in under 5 seconds, up to HUF 20 million per transaction.
- 02BKR (Bankkozi Kliring Rendszer), GIRO Zrt, bulk interbank clearing for HUF.
- 03VIBER (Valos Idejű Brutto Elszamolasi Rendszer), Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), RTGS for high-value HUF.
- 04SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), for EUR transactions.
- 05TARGET2 / T2, accessible via MNB as a non-euro participant.
- 06Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
