Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Guatemalan IBAN reference, run through these steps before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name and NIT (tax ID) with the Guatemalan bank. Inbound wires get held when these do not align.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Guatemala is not in SEPA, so inbound EUR or USD wires use correspondent banking.
  • 03
For domestic Guatemalan payments, the recipient is more likely to quote a standard account number than an IBAN. LBTR handles high-value GTQ flows and ACH Guatemala covers retail.
  • 04
Confirm the account currency. Guatemalan banks typically offer GTQ and USD.
  • 05
Send a small test transfer first when paying a new Guatemalan counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Guatemala

  • 01
IBAN is not the formal domestic standard in Guatemala. Some banks use the GT IBAN format for international transfers, but the SWIFT IBAN Registry status is informal, and most domestic transfers continue to use traditional account numbers.
  • 02
The 28-character Guatemalan IBAN begins with GT, two check digits, a 4-character bank code, and a 20-character account identifier.
  • 03
Domestic Guatemalan payments flow through LBTR for high-value GTQ and through ACH Guatemala for retail. For inbound cross-border wires, the IBAN can serve as a routing identifier, but Guatemalan banks generally expect SWIFT/BIC plus account number. For any large or first-time payment, confirm with the recipient bank what format they prefer.
