Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a German IBAN verified, run through these final checks.
- 01Confirm the registered beneficiary name. Germany applies EU-wide Verification of Payee on EUR transfers from October 2025, so mismatches will be blocked.
- 02For SEPA transfers, no SWIFT/BIC is required. For inbound payments from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer (same or next day) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer / Echtzeitueberweisung (under 10 seconds, 24/7).
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. German banks commonly support multi-currency sub-accounts under the same IBAN.
- 05For first-time supplier payments, send a small test transfer before scaling.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Germany
Exact beneficiary name

Correct SWIFT/BIC code

Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Germany
- 01IBAN has been mandatory in Germany for every domestic payment since 1 February 2014, when SEPA migration completed.
- 02The 22-character German IBAN begins with DE, two check digits, an 8-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ) bank code, and a 10-digit account number (Kontonummer).
- 03The legacy BLZ plus Kontonummer is now embedded inside the IBAN, so it is not used standalone. Germany is the largest eurozone economy and a full SEPA member with Deutsche Bundesbank as Eurosystem co-operator of T2. The same IBAN works for domestic German payments, every SEPA destination, and inbound SWIFT wires. The giropay domestic online payments scheme was wound down at the end of 2024 and is no longer active.
Germany Payment Schemes
Germany operates within Eurosystem rails, with Deutsche Bundesbank as a T2 co-operator.
- 01T2, Eurosystem (Deutsche Bundesbank co-operator), RTGS for high-value euro, replaced TARGET2 in March 2023.
- 02SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 03SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst / Echtzeitueberweisung), mandatory send and receive across German PSPs since October 2025.
- 04TIPS, Eurosystem, instant payment settlement.
- 05SEPA Direct Debit (SDD CORE and SDD B2B), recurring euro direct debits.
- 06Girocard, German domestic debit card scheme.
