Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a French IBAN verified, complete these checks before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the registered beneficiary name. France's Verification du Beneficiaire (VoP) is mandatory from October 2025, so any IBAN/name mismatch will be flagged or blocked.
  • 02
SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound payments from outside SEPA, pair it with the BIC.
  • 03
Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (Virement Instantane). All eurozone PSPs must support send and receive of instant from October 2025.
  • 04
Confirm the account holds EUR. Most French corporate accounts also hold USD or GBP under the same IBAN.
  • 05
Send a small test for first-time beneficiaries, especially for high-value invoices.

IBAN Rules in France

  • 01
IBAN has been mandatory in France for every domestic and SEPA transfer since SEPA migration in 2014. The Releve d'Identite Bancaire (RIB) document that banks issue contains the IBAN itself.
  • 02
The 27-character French IBAN begins with FR, two check digits, a 5-digit bank code, a 5-digit branch (guichet) code, an 11-character account number, and two RIB key check digits.
  • 03
Legacy RIB account numbers are now embedded inside the IBAN, so there is no parallel local format in active use. France is a founding eurozone and SEPA member, with Banque de France as one of three Eurosystem central banks operating T2. The same IBAN works for domestic French payments, SEPA, SEPA Instant, and inbound SWIFT.

France Payment Schemes

France operates at the heart of Eurosystem payments, with Banque de France as a T2 co-operator.

  • 01
T2, Eurosystem (Banque de France co-operator), RTGS for high-value euro settlement.
  • 02
CORE(FR), STET, domestic retail clearing system for SCT, SDD, and SCT Inst.
  • 03
SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
  • 04
SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst / Virement Instantane), 24/7 EUR transfers, mandatory send and receive across eurozone PSPs since October 2025.
  • 05
    TIPS, Eurosystem, instant payment settlement.
  • 06
Carte Bancaire (CB), domestic card scheme.
  • 07
SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), recurring euro direct debit.
