Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Finnish IBAN to hand, run through these checks before sending.

  • 01
Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Finnish bank. Verification of Payee applies across all eurozone PSPs from October 2025.
  • 02
SEPA transfers need only the IBAN. For inbound non-SEPA payments, pair it with the BIC.
  • 03
Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer (same or next day) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (under 10 seconds, 24/7).
  • 04
For consumer P2P, Siirto is widely used by Finns. It uses a phone-number proxy and settles via SCT Inst.
  • 05
Confirm the account holds EUR and send a small test value before any large first-time corporate transfer.

IBAN Rules in Finland

  • 01
IBAN has been mandatory in Finland for every domestic payment since 2008. The country was one of the first to retire its legacy domestic account format.
  • 02
The 18-character Finnish IBAN begins with FI, two check digits, a 6-digit bank code, a 7-digit account number, and a 1-digit national check digit.
  • 03
There is no parallel local account format still in use. Finland sits in the eurozone, is a full SEPA member, and supports SEPA Instant broadly. The same IBAN works for domestic payments, for any SEPA destination, and for inbound SWIFT from outside SEPA. Siirto adds a mobile-friendly overlay for consumer payments without changing the underlying IBAN.

Finland Payment Schemes

Finland runs on Eurosystem rails with a heavily used domestic instant overlay called Siirto.

  • 01
SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
  • 02
SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers settling in under 10 seconds, broadly available via Finnish banks.
  • 03
TARGET2 / T2, Eurosystem with Suomen Pankki as participant, RTGS for high-value EUR.
  • 04
    TIPS, Eurosystem, instant settlement layer.
  • 05
Siirto, Automatia, domestic mobile-initiated instant payment overlay using phone number proxies, on top of SCT Inst.
  • 06
SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), for recurring euro direct debits.
