Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With an Estonian IBAN in hand, complete these final checks.
- 01Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Estonian bank. Verification of Payee checks now apply across the eurozone.
- 02For SEPA transfers, no SWIFT/BIC is needed. For inbound payments from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer for standard settlement and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer for under 10 seconds 24/7.
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Most Estonian banks support multi-currency accounts but charge conversion margins.
- 05Send a small test transfer first for new beneficiaries, especially for cross-border payroll or supplier flows.

IBAN Rules in Estonia
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Estonia for every domestic and SEPA payment. The country was an early SEPA migrator and IBAN is the only identifier used.
- 02The 20-character Estonian IBAN begins with EE, two check digits, a 2-digit bank code, and a 14-digit account identifier.
- 03Legacy domestic account numbers were converted to IBAN at SEPA migration, so there is no parallel local format in use. Estonia has been in the eurozone since 2011 and supports both SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant. The same IBAN works for domestic Estonian payments, for any SEPA destination, and for inbound SWIFT wires from outside the SEPA area.
Estonia Payment Schemes
Estonia operates within Eurosystem rails, with Eesti Pank as the local component.
- 01SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), pan-European EUR credit transfer.
- 02SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), 24/7 EUR transfers settling in under 10 seconds.
- 03TARGET2 / T2, Eurosystem with Eesti Pank as participant, RTGS for high-value EUR.
- 04TIPS, Eurosystem, instant payment settlement layer.
- 05SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), for recurring euro direct debits.
- 06Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
