Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a verified Egyptian IBAN, run through these steps before transferring.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name with the Egyptian bank. CBE rejected transfers with mismatched names since the 2020 mandate.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Egypt uses IBAN as the routing identifier for both inbound and outbound flows.
  • 03
Choose the rail. Inbound EGP wires settle through RTGS or ACH Egypt. For domestic consumer payments, InstaPay (the consumer face of IPN) handles up to EGP 70,000 per transaction 24/7.
  • 04
Be aware of FX controls. Outbound EGP from Egypt is restricted, and corporates may need CBE clearance for large transfers.
  • 05
Send a small test value first when remitting to a new Egyptian counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Egypt

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Egypt for every domestic and international transfer, in force since 30 June 2020 under a Central Bank of Egypt directive. Transfers without IBAN are rejected.
  • 02
The 29-character Egyptian IBAN begins with EG, two check digits, a 4-digit bank code, a 4-digit branch code, and a 17-digit account identifier that embeds the currency type.
  • 03
No legacy domestic-only account format remains in active use. The 2020 mandate fully migrated Egyptian banks to IBAN, so the same identifier is used whether you are sending an inbound wire through SWIFT, settling a domestic payment through RTGS or ACH Egypt, or initiating a consumer transfer through the Instant Payment Network. FX restrictions affect outbound EGP flows but do not change the IBAN requirement.

Egypt Payment Schemes

Egypt's payment infrastructure is anchored by the Central Bank of Egypt and the Egyptian Banks Company (EBC).

  • 01
RTGS, Central Bank of Egypt, real-time gross settlement for high-value EGP payments.
  • 02
ACH Egypt, Egyptian Banks Company (EBC), bulk retail clearing.
  • 03
Instant Payment Network (IPN), EBC under CBE mandate, launched March 2022, the rail behind InstaPay.
  • 04
InstaPay, EBC, consumer-facing app on top of IPN, 24/7 instant transfers up to EGP 70,000 per transaction.
  • 05
    Meeza, EBC, domestic card scheme.
  • 06
    SWIFT, for cross-border settlement.
