Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Dominican Republic IBAN verified, take these steps before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name and cedula or RNC (tax ID) with the Dominican bank, since AML rules tie accounts to verified identity.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Dominican banks use IBAN primarily for inbound SWIFT wires.
  • 03
For domestic Dominican payments, ACH Dominicana or LBTR-RD handle the actual settlement, and the recipient may quote account number plus bank identifier rather than IBAN.
  • 04
Confirm the account currency. Dominican banks commonly hold DOP, USD, and EUR.
  • 05
For first-time transfers, send a small test value and ask the recipient to confirm credit before scaling up.

IBAN Rules in Dominican Republic

  • 01
IBAN in the Dominican Republic is primarily an international wrapper. Domestic transfers more commonly use the bank account number plus bank identifier through ACH or LBTR-RD, while IBAN is the standard reference for inbound SWIFT.
  • 02
The 28-character Dominican IBAN begins with DO, two check digits, a 4-character bank code, and a 20-digit account number.
  • 03
Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana (BCRD) supervises the payment system through SIPARD, the national settlement platform. Legacy domestic account numbers continue to be used alongside IBAN, so the IBAN should be your reference for any cross-border payment but may not be what a Dominican payee quotes for a local transfer.
