Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a confirmed Danish IBAN, complete these steps before transferring.
- 01Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Danish bank to avoid Verification of Payee rejections.
- 02For inbound DKK from outside SEPA, pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Danish banks also accept SEPA transfers in EUR.
- 03Note that Danish consumers and businesses commonly use the local format (4-digit registration number plus account number) for domestic DKK transfers, so a Danish payee may not quote the IBAN at all.
- 04From April 2025, DKK transfers settle through TARGET DKK and TIPS DKK, so cross-border instant DKK payments are now possible within Eurosystem rails.
- 05For consumer P2P, MobilePay (now Vipps MobilePay) is the dominant rail and works alongside bank IBANs.

IBAN Rules in Denmark
- 01IBAN is not mandatory in Denmark for domestic transfers, which still use the legacy 4-digit registration number (reg.nr.) plus account number format. IBAN is required for cross-border SEPA and SWIFT payments.
- 02The 18-character Danish IBAN begins with DK, two check digits, a 4-digit bank registration number, and a 10-digit account number.
- 03Denmark is a full SEPA member but the krone (DKK) sits outside the euro under ERM II at 7.46038 DKK per EUR. The country took a major infrastructure step on 1 April 2025 when DKK joined Eurosystem T2 and TIPS, so the krone now settles via the same rails as the euro. Domestic Danish customers still typically quote reg.nr. and account number, not IBAN.
