Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Czech IBAN to hand, run through these final checks.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary name as registered with the Czech bank. Czech banks routinely reject inbound wires on name mismatch.
  • 02
For inbound CZK from outside the SEPA area, pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC.
  • 03
Decide the rail. CZK domestic transfers settle through CERTIS, run by the Czech National Bank. Instant Payments are available 24/7 but adoption is bank-by-bank.
  • 04
For inbound EUR, Czech banks support standard SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant via EBA STEP2.
  • 05
Be aware Czech consumers still use the local prefix-account/bank-code format domestically, so suppliers may quote you the local format rather than the IBAN. Both reference the same account.

IBAN Rules in Czechia

  • 01
IBAN use in Czechia is conditional. For cross-border and SEPA transfers, IBAN is required. For purely domestic CZK transfers, the legacy local format (prefix-account/bank-code, for example 19-2000145399/0800) remains in widespread use alongside IBAN.
  • 02
The 24-character Czech IBAN begins with CZ, two check digits, a 4-digit bank code, a 6-digit account prefix (often all zeros), and a 10-digit account number.
  • 03
Czechia is a full EU and SEPA member but is not in the eurozone, so the koruna (CZK) is the domestic currency. EUR transfers are supported via SEPA, but CERTIS, the national clearing system, handles all CZK. Foreign senders should always quote the IBAN. Czech consumers will more often quote the local format.

Czechia Payment Schemes

Czechia's payments are unusual in routing both RTGS and retail flows through a single Czech National Bank system.

  • 01
CERTIS (Czech Express Real Time Interbank Gross Settlement System), Czech National Bank, the sole interbank payment system for CZK, handling RTGS, retail clearing, and instant payments.
  • 02
Instant Payments within CERTIS, Czech National Bank, voluntary scheme for participants, CZK transfers in seconds 24/7 up to CZK 2.5 million, median 0.5-second processing.
  • 03
SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), and SEPA Direct Debit (SDD), for EUR transfers via EBA STEP2.
  • 04
    Visa and Mastercard card schemes.
