Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a confirmed Cypriot IBAN, follow these steps before sending.
- 01Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Cypriot bank. EU-wide Verification of Payee rules apply.
- 02For SEPA transfers, the IBAN is enough. For inbound payments from non-SEPA jurisdictions, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer for standard settlement and SEPA Instant for 24/7 sub-10-second delivery.
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Most Cypriot banks also offer USD and GBP accounts for international clients.
- 05For first-time beneficiaries, especially for property or legal transfers, send a small test value and reconcile against bank confirmation.

IBAN Rules in Cyprus
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Cyprus for every domestic and cross-border credit transfer, in force since SEPA migration in 2014.
- 02The 28-character Cypriot IBAN begins with CY, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 5-digit branch code, and a 16-character account identifier.
- 03Legacy domestic account numbers are embedded inside the IBAN, so there is no parallel local system to manage. As a eurozone and SEPA member since 2008, Cyprus uses the same IBAN for domestic EUR payments, SEPA transfers, and SEPA Instant. The country's large international business banking sector also supports multi-currency accounts under the same IBAN.
Cyprus Payment Schemes
Cyprus runs a small but fully Eurosystem-aligned payment infrastructure overseen by the Central Bank of Cyprus.
- 01T2 / T2-CY, Eurosystem, RTGS for euro, replaced TARGET2 on 20 March 2023.
- 02CY-SDD (Cyprus SEPA Direct Debit Payment System), live since 2014, settles in T2-CY.
- 03CCH (Cyprus Clearing House), domestic cheque clearing.
- 04JCC Payment Systems Ltd, private operator, card acquiring, clearing, and settlement for Visa, Mastercard, and Diners.
- 05Cyprus Stock Exchange, ancillary settlement.
- 06TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 07SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), and SEPA Direct Debit (SDD).
