Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a verified Croatian IBAN, complete these steps before transferring.
- 01Confirm the beneficiary's exact registered name. Verification of Payee checks now apply across the eurozone, including Croatia.
- 02For SEPA payments, the IBAN is enough. For inbound non-SEPA transfers, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Choose between SEPA Credit Transfer (settles same or next day) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, mandatory across Croatian PSPs from October 2025.
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Croatia adopted the euro on 1 January 2023, so HRK is no longer the domestic currency.
- 05For larger amounts, send a small test to flush out any name or routing mismatches before scaling.

IBAN Rules in Croatia
- 01IBAN has been mandatory in Croatia for every domestic and cross-border transfer since the country's SEPA migration, reinforced by euro adoption on 1 January 2023.
- 02The 21-character Croatian IBAN begins with HR, two check digits, a 7-digit bank code, and a 10-digit account number.
- 03Legacy HRK account numbers were fully replaced at euro adoption. The Nacionalni racun (NRA) format that older Croatian banking still references is embedded inside the IBAN, not used standalone. Croatia is a full SEPA and eurozone member, so the same IBAN works for domestic Croatian payments and for SEPA transfers across all 36 SEPA countries.
Croatia Payment Schemes
Croatia's payment rails were reconfigured around the Eurosystem when the country joined the euro on 1 January 2023.
- 01T2 / TARGET2-HR, Eurosystem, RTGS for euro, replaced HSVP (the kuna RTGS) at euro adoption.
- 02EuroNCS (Euro National Clearing System), Financial Agency (Fina), SCT and SDD clearing.
- 03EuroNCSInst, Fina, SCT Inst clearing, integrated into TIPS on 24 June 2023.
- 04TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 05SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), and SEPA Direct Debit (SDD).
- 06HSVP (kuna RTGS) and NKS (kuna retail clearing), decommissioned at euro adoption.
