Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

With a Costa Rican IBAN verified, complete these checks before sending.

  • 01
Confirm the beneficiary name and tax identifier (cedula or DIMEX) with the Costa Rican bank, since SINPE accounts are tied to verified identity.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for any inbound wire from outside Central America.
  • 03
For payments inside Costa Rica, the IBAN routes through SINPE. For P2P amounts, SINPE Movil works with a phone number and settles instantly.
  • 04
Confirm the account currency. Costa Rican banks hold CRC, USD, and often EUR.
  • 05
Send a small test value for first-time corporate beneficiaries, then confirm the credit notice before scaling up.

IBAN Rules in Costa Rica

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Costa Rica for every account on the SINPE network. Banco Central de Costa Rica mandated the migration in February 2017, so the IBAN IS the domestic account number.
  • 02
The 22-character Costa Rican IBAN begins with CR, two check digits, a leading zero, a 3-digit bank code, and a 14-digit account number. The 17-digit BBAN is issued and registered by Banco Central de Costa Rica.
  • 03
There is no parallel legacy account system, since BCCR consolidated everything onto IBAN. The same IBAN works for domestic SINPE transfers, SINPE Movil P2P, and inbound SWIFT wires from abroad. For inbound USD, Costa Rican banks credit the USD account directly if the recipient holds one, or convert at the receiving margin.

Costa Rica Payment Schemes

Costa Rica's payment infrastructure is operated directly by Banco Central de Costa Rica through SINPE.

  • 01
SINPE (Sistema Nacional de Pagos Electronicos), Banco Central de Costa Rica, the national electronic payments platform handling interbank transfers, cheque clearing, and direct debit, live since April 1997.
  • 02
SINPE Movil, Banco Central de Costa Rica, instant P2P payments by mobile number, 24/7, with over 80% adult adoption.
  • 03

  • 04
SINPE Regional, Banco Central de Costa Rica, regional cross-border payments across Central America.
  • 05
LBTR (Liquidacion Bruta en Tiempo Real), BCCR, real-time gross settlement for high-value flows.
