Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a Brazilian IBAN confirmed, here is what to do next.
- 01Verify the beneficiary's full registered name plus their CPF (individual) or CNPJ (company). Brazilian banks reject inbound wires when these do not match.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC, since Brazil uses IBAN only for inbound international transfers per BCB Circular 3.625.
- 03For local payments inside Brazil, ask whether the recipient prefers a PIX key (CPF, CNPJ, phone, email, or random key). PIX is free, instant, 24/7 and is the dominant domestic rail.
- 04Confirm whether the account is BRL only. Inbound USD is converted at the receiving bank at its FX margin.
- 05Send a small test transfer before a first-time large remittance.
Common transfer mistakes to avoid for Brazil
Exact beneficiary name
Must match bank records exactly to avoid rejection or delays
Correct SWIFT/BIC code
Ensures the payment routes to the right bank.
Currency match
Sending the wrong currency can trigger extra fees or failed transfers.
Active account details
Outdated or inactive accounts can result in returned payments.
IBAN Rules in Brazil
- 01IBAN is not mandatory inside Brazil. It exists purely as an international wrapper for inbound SWIFT payments, in force since Banco Central do Brasil Circular 3.625 in 2013.
- 02The Brazilian IBAN is 29 characters: BR, two check digits, an 8-digit ISPB bank code, a 5-digit branch (agencia) code, a 10-digit account number, a 1-letter account type (for example C for checking), and a 1-character account holder position.
- 03Domestically, Brazilians use ISPB plus agencia plus account, or far more commonly a PIX key. PIX has transformed retail payments since its November 2020 launch and now handles a huge share of consumer and business payments. IBAN's role is narrow but important: it is what foreign senders use to push money into a Brazilian account through SWIFT.
Brazil Payment Schemes
Brazil's payment landscape is dominated by PIX, with Banco Central do Brasil and CIP operating the underlying rails.
- 01PIX, Banco Central do Brasil, 24/7 instant retail and business payments, free for individuals, launched November 2020.
- 04SITRAF, CIP, hybrid continuous net settlement for credit transfers.
- 05C3 (Central de Cessoes de Credito), CIP, credit assignment registry.
- 06Elo, domestic card scheme, alongside Visa and Mastercard.
