Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a valid Bosnian IBAN confirmed, complete the following before transferring.
- 01Verify the registered beneficiary name with the Bosnian bank. Cross-border wires into BAM accounts often get held when names do not align with bank records.
- 02Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC since Bosnia is not yet a SEPA participant. Correspondent banking is still the inbound route.
- 03Decide the rail. Payments of BAM 10,000 or more must settle through the CBBH RTGS. Smaller amounts go through the Giro Clearing System in one of four daily settlement cycles.
- 04Note that BAM is pegged to EUR at 1.95583, so EUR remittances convert at a fixed rate at the receiving bank.
- 05Send a small test transfer first when paying a new counterparty.

IBAN Rules in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- 01IBAN is mandatory in Bosnia and Herzegovina for both domestic and cross-border transactions, governed by the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina's instruction on IBAN structure and use.
- 02The 20-character Bosnian IBAN begins with BA, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 3-digit branch or organisational unit code, an 8-digit account number, and two national check digits.
- 03Legacy domestic transaction account numbers have been migrated to IBAN format, so there is no parallel system to worry about. Bosnia and Herzegovina has applied for SEPA membership and the legal framework is being aligned, but as of mid-2026 the country is not yet operational in SEPA, so EUR transfers still route via correspondent banks.
Bosnia and Herzegovina Payment Schemes
Bosnia and Herzegovina runs a simple two-rail payment system operated directly by the central bank.
